I love the Sookie Stackhouse series and the audio books are great too. Johanna Parker does a great job of bringing Charlaine Harris's spunky heroine (and her crazy world of vampires, witches and were-shifters) to life.
I'm a big fan of all the Sookie Stackhouse books. I've read them all at least 3 times and I have a pretty ingrained idea of how Sookie sounds. This narrator is spot on! Sookie sounds Southern but not stupid and there are obvious differences between Sookie's voice and other characters.
I am a retired Court Reporter and I LOVE books. All kinds of books but my favorites are mysteries and period books. I like civil war books and some biographies.
It's really good. I love the humor and the characters. It's a shame the TV series based on this series isn't any good.
I am completely hooked on these books, and am surprised at how she manages to keep them fresh and exciting. Loved the ending and can't wait to listen to the next one. Johanna Parker is a wonderful reader.
I have loved every single one of the Sookie Stackhouse series... until this one. I felt like the narrator was even bored. In the other series she talked with enthusiasm - but this one she was more monotone. It seemed that about every 5 minutes Sookie was rehashing something that happened in a previous book. It was so bad that she was rehashing events that had happened in this book. It felt like Ms. Harris didn't have anything new for Sookie to experience so she had to take up space on the page with history.
Thanks to HBO's series True Blood, I was introduced to Charlaine Harris and her Sookie Stackhouse series. I've listened to all in the series and am a fan. All of them are fun-filled reads. Don't expect the book and the series to be exactly the same - it's interesting to compare the differences in character and plot development. The humor is quite dry - my favorite type. Johanna Parker does an excellent job as the narrator.
but, this is not the best book of the 8 so far. I couldn't put down the other 7, read them rather than listened to them, but this one is not quite up to par as far as being as interesting. Contrary to what some others have said, I think the narrator is quite good, much better than a lot of them on other books I have listened to lately. Since this book, #8 in the series, is not going to be released until March I was thrilled you had it here on audible.com.
I have listened/read all of the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries, 1 - 8. I enjoyed every single one of them. The writing is good, clear, suspenseful and humorous. The narrator, Johanna Parker, does some of the best narrating I have heard...exactly the way I would presume Sookie Stackhouse would sound. You can't go wrong with this series. I CAN'T WAIT until installment NINE!!
I'm a single Mom who LOVES to read and write novels
Charlaine Harris is one of my favorite authors. I have been listening and reading from the start of the Sookie series. This book has some things that make you think "Well no wonder ...". We get to meet some interesting new characters. And some VERY unexpected things happen. I do recommend that if you are thinking of starting the Sookie series that you start with an earlier book. Otherwise, you lose out on some really cool "oh my goodness" moments. I would and do recommend this series to EVERYONE who enjoys MaryJanice Davidson, Katie McAlister, and Laurell K Hamilton. Also, anyone who like the True Blood series on HBO. And check out her other series that begins with Grave Sight.
