I was concerned about buying the book after reading the reviews, but honestly, the narrator is not bad at all. I have heard some really bad narration and it can destroy the experience, but this will not happen on this one.
Every time I read a new Shannara title I am amazed that Terry Brooks has yet again come up with new concepts to his magical world which now turns out to be our own future. I look forward to each and every new title he writes.
Logan Tom is my favorite character. His battle with personal demons as well as the demons trying to destroy humanity is well done.
I enjoyed having Phil Gigante be the narrator for all of the books that tell of the transition from our world to the world of Shanarra.
I agree with the other reviewers... after listening to Dick Hill do the first book... it is extremely hard to listen to Phil Gigante do this book... He reads it too fast.. I found myself rewinding to listen to parts again because of his speed. He was extremely dramatic at certain points that made me annoyed, it just sounded like overacting. I would have enjoyed this series much more if Dick Hill had continued with it.
I just finished listening to Armageddon's Children the first in this series and was so hooked that I immediately ordered this the second in the series. These stories are extremely compelling from the first line. I am now hooked on the series. Two things that let this particular version down for me though were the reader and the format.
Dick Hill read the version of Armageddon's Children I listened to and he read really well in a moody fashion that enabled me to really visualize the scenes and get deeply involved with the characters. Phil Gigante however on reading this story rushed through the narration at such a pace that I found myself getting quite irritated.
Phil, SLOW DOWN!!!!
The version of Armageddon's Children I listened to was recorded in 'MP3 CD' format. Now after having downloaded a few books from Audible with DRM restrictions on how many devices and an authorization process that I find a real pain in the rear end I will go out of my way to only buy audio books in this 'MP3 CD' format. Because the 'MP3 CD' has no restrictions I was able to share the book with my family all of whom are now hooked on the series.
Audible - migrate to MP3 CD or just MP3 format! I for one will not be purchasing anything else from you until you do!
Good book awful to listen to!
He's just awful its a crying shame he reads book three
Jumping into this series in the middle (this is the 2nd book) presented a little challenge at the beginning, but it didn't take too long before I was caught up with the characters and their plight. Now I'm anxious to see how it all resolves. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 becasue it was a struggle at the start .. the book assumes you already know what has occurred and takes a little extra effort .. worth it but effort .. if you've not read the first installment.
