Is jumping the shark restricted to television series, or can print series do it too? Maybe I'm just getting old, but way too much wackiness ensues in this book. (The goalkeeper has set up a table and chair and is having lunch!)
Stephen Briggs does very nice characters and accents. He reads straght narration as if it were nonfiction, with no trace of irony. I guess this is a valid choice and certainly better than using a tone that says you should laugh now.
I hate to say this because it's so heartbreaking, but this is NOT Terry Pratchett at his best. At times, the book feels confused and the plot wanders off into places that don't make sense for the overall story. This is not critique coming from an uninitiated fan, I've got just about every Terry Pratchett book there is and I've listened to them all multiple times. Unseen Academicals is just not his best. That said, I don't think this book isn't worth a listen. You've got to give the man props for writing a book as he's slowly losing his memory (which has got to be more than a little irksome for a great author who knows it). Overall, while not his best, I'd definitely recommend this book.
Is it my impression or is Terry P. not really trying anymore? I also get the feeling that they published the book without editing it.
This is one of TP's worse books, sadly I have to admit that his worse book is still worth at least 4 stars compared to others. His stories always flow well and you really want to keep on reading, even the not-so-good ones.
I Love Terry Pratchett and the diskworld. But this is just BAD. NO humor, NO plot, NO STORY!!!!! I am 4 hours into this and am bored to tears. Stepen Briggs is doing his best but good grief there is not a lot to work with here. I hope that when I finish this I can edit my review to say it got at least ok.
If you like the Disc world then this is more of the same. It has Pratchett's style of humor and will give you smiles and a few chuckles but this one is not family friendly. It has some strong language and engages heavily in the sexual innuendo so I don't suggest this for family car rides.
