Reading the works of James Herriot in print is always enjoyable. His writing is beautiful and moving. Listening to Christopher Timothy bring those words to life is exquisite. Masterful writing comes together with brilliant narration, and the result is perfection. These books are a treat for the soul.
I am a Christian wife and mother. I write two blogs. My somewhat theological blog is called "Just Another Clay Pot," and my Fiction/Poetry blog is called "Weightiness and Whimsy."
All of Herriot's books are very enjoyable because he had a wonderful eye for beauty, for humor, for poignancy, for sorrow, and for joy. And he knew how to set it all down masterfully on paper.
However, before reading this to children, parents should be aware that this was a hard-drinking culture, and Herriot didn't minimize that fact.
As for the narration? Well, it's Christopher Timothy! What more needs to be said? He's wonderful.
Well narrated, depicting the rich variety of accents, I come back to these books when I need a vacation. While i grew up in a modern Ohio farmtown, this book takes me home to simple folk and an honest day's work.
The stories in this Herriot novel are great. I love Christopher Timothy's narration. He is just great. My young daughter has commented how he makes the voices so different that he really makes the story come alive. I wish there were more to listen to!
I felt as if I was privleged to be there....in the English farming countryside....watching & enjoying the people, the animals...the most ordinary but precious experiences......from the point of view of a good man with an appreciative sense of humor....a refreshing, positive listening experience!
also presents the English temperment at it's best!
My mother gave me this series to read when I was about 11 or 12 and I thought it was wonderful. I got James Herriot's Stories for Children from Audible for my kids to listen to on car rides and enjoyed it so much that I got the All Things Great and Small series for myself. It held up to everything I thought about it 30 years ago. I was a great series to listen to while I worked. Wonderful observations on humanity, funny stories, sad moments and just an overall pleasure to enjoy again. Excellent performance by Christopher Timothy as well.
I GOT ACQUAINTED WITH HERRIOT VIA THE TV SERIES AND LOVE THE BOOKS.
HE GIVES EACH CHARACTER A VOICE AND PERSONALITY. HAVING SEEN HIM IN THE TV SERIES, HE IS THE MOST NATURAL PERSON TO READ THE BOOKS. MY RESPECT FOR HIM AS AN ACTOR HAS INCREASED EXPONENTIALLY BECAUSE OF HIS PERFORMANCES IN THESE BOOKS. HIS ACCENTS, VOICES, TIMING - PERFECT! HE HAS ACTED OUT THE STORIES AND MADE THEM MORE ENTERTAINING AND REAL.
SINCE IT IS BROKEN UP INTO DIFFERENT STORIES, ITS EASY TO PICK UP AT MY CONVENIENCE.
Yes, and I have.
Love all of james herriott's stories
Love the characters and descriptions of the scenery.
Nothing that stands out at this moment. I have heard all his stories so am not sure what came from this one. I do love how some of the adventures are still relevant today.
If you liked "All Things Bright and Beautiful" you will love this too! It touches your heart!
You will enjoy every moment. No one tells a story better than James Herriot did. The person who reads the story Tim ? does a great job. His voice sounds just like James Herriot, at least it seems that way. My tapes from years ago sound almost exact.
