This was such an entertaining and unique read. I kept passing on excerpts to my husband as I listened. The story, character descriptions and messages have stuck me now for quite awhile. I highly recommend this little-known book. You will be glad you experienced it and I think you'll pass it along too. Special credit given to the narrator who made me like him as much as the story.
I really enjoyed this book. It was recommended to me by a friend and I am very glad I took the suggestion. The characters of Perry, grandam, Keith, Gary and Cherry were all so enjoyable and you rooted for them all. The characters of Perry's "family" almost ruined the book for me and I had second thoughts about finishing the book because of my severe disgust for them. I am so glad that I chose to stick it out. This story is sweet with memorable characters and important life reminders mixed with a ton of humor. I firmly believe that the people I most like and respect in my life all have a little "Perry" in them. I won't forget these characters for awhile and I can still hear their voices. The reader was excellent.... Will try him again.
This is a truly heart-warming story. There is as much wisdom about human nature in this book as in any I've read.
Paul Michael's narration was, as always, astonishing. He took a diamond and turned into a precision cut, fiery jewel.
This was a sweet book about a simple man who can be quite smart. It's the crazy characters around him that make you laugh - the Vietnam vet/hippie, the absurdly greedy family, and Cherry, the luscious store clerk. Patricia Wood created a fabulous set of characters and Paul Michael captures Perry's voice perfectly. It was nice to escape to Perry's world for a while.
Say something about yourself!
GReat story.. i really enjoyed this book.. i especially liked how the main character had a mind of his own and thanks to all that money he got to finally make it up.. good listen. great narrator. i give it two 2 dollar scratch offs.
Any book I listen to more than 3 times gets a 5! You root for the most loving, sensitive main character and you just want to protect him throuout the entire storyline. A must listen. Its slow but so is he and its okay.
I loved the narration and the quirky story about a young man who has mild mental retardation- the author captures the nuances of the disability and how others interact with him: family and friends. I found myself rooting for him, and in the end he's happy. I like happy endings.
