I wished I had bought this book to READ, rather than LISTEN. The premise of the book sounded great, but the author went on and on about her childhood, bad relationships, until it really got tiresome. I would have skipped pages and pages, but couldn't with the audio format. The book was written by a woman supposed to be in her 40's, but read by someone who sounded in her 60's. Can't wait until it's over.
Best book I've read since Seabiscuit. Love horse? Then this is a must read, especially for women who love riding and rescuing horses.
Beautifully written, engaging, thought-provoking. Susan Richards wrote about how difficult it was to get her writing published, which seems so odd because her writing is both lovely and powerful. And her story is interesting and meaningful even if the person reading it knows or cares little about horses. The memoir addresses many other areas. I think Lorna Raver's narration adds a great deal to the listening experience. She seems perfect for this story. Just a great book.
a really nice story by an interesting lady..any horse owner or lover will feel close to this story but also surprised by its origionality. a good light read.
Lorna Raver, the narrator, does a fantastic job. Her voice matches the tone and pace of the memoir perfectly. This book is for Horse Lovers! It's also for anyone that has ever felt abandoned by the people they love. Ms. Richard's honesty is inspiring. Also, Ms. Richards clearly relates the nuances of horse personality, although she might be "anthropomorphising" a wee bit. : )
Lorna Raver does an excellent job of reading this wonderful book so that you feel like you are actually hearing the author Susan Richards tell her story. Although Richards has faced some difficult issues in her life, she presents them using a wonderful sense of humor. A great tribute to how the animals in our lives help us to define ourselves as human beings. I highly recommend this book, especially to animal lovers. Richards is a talented writer. I am looking forward to listening to "Chosen Forever".
Being a horse obsessed woman, I was able to identify with so much of this character's life, her journey and the valuable lessons her horses bring to her life.
What a great story! Ms. Richards did such a great job giving enough detail of her past to make the current situation hilarious, painful, and full of emotional/spiritual growth without going too far. She was able to show what she learned and how she was willing to take such a broken creature's spirit as a lesson to open her own heart.
I finished this book on my riding mower and I can only imagine what my neighbors thought as I mowed circles of fresh green grass with tears streaming down my face!!! Bravo! However, instead of feeling "drained" at the end of her journey, I felt hopeful and jubilant that Lay Me Down's love is not in vain! Thank you for a great book.
Narrator was phenomenal, also!
If you love animals, no matter what kind you can relate to this story. I laughed, and I cried, and enjoyed every moment of this story of rebuilding ones life through love of a horse.
