I started listening to SEP a little over a year ago and was so looking forward to more sassy, witty chracters which this selection did not offer. I appreciate the need to depart for the same types of characters but the ones in this book were totally unlikeable. This book dragged on forever. I won't give up on SEP as I typically enjoy her writing.
I have recently discovered SEP and have listened to or read most of the books. I enjoyed the book - unfortunately, Anna Fields did not get to narrate this book before she died. I listened to part of it, and then finished the book in written form.
The author of this book is one of my favorites, and this book is very well written. However it can make you sick to your stomache. If your expecting a love story, it isn't. It's about two parents holding secrects so sickening, and using their daughter as a yo-yo between them, making money off of her and putting her in positions that no parent who actually loved their child would do. It's placed in the past of the old glamourous hollywood, and this girl is used and abused in the most disgusting situations. My stomach became sick. again it's well written and probably has more truth in it than what we would want to believe. But it's tough on the nerves.
I'm a huge SEP fan...listen to her books over and over..especially the Chicago Stars series(LOVE Natural Born Charmer). Glitter Baby was well written, but the characters were just difficult to like. Wasn't the sassy cute style of Ain't She Sweet but it is worth a listen.
Book was super. Narration was super. I wanted it to go on and on. I will look for books read by Julia Gibson, and am already a fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips.
The most generous thing I can say is to wonder if this is an early, unpublished, work that they recycled to make a couple of bucks. This is so much weaker than other SEP books. I keep waiting for the story to get started...but nothing.
Furthermore, the sound quality is terrible, it is muffled. I can't blame the reader, she can only read what is on the page. I doubt I'll finish this one. Life is too short.
