As a kid I spent most of my summers at the Jersey shore. This is a trip down memory lane for me, fortunately minus the murders. The Ceepak books are great mysteries with terrific characters and one of the best audiobook narrators I have ever listened to. The added bonus is the author's attention to detail about NJ and the Jersey shore.
I have always loved to read, and now I really enjoy listening to my books as well!!
There is always the concern that a book you're looking forward to reading/listening to just won't live up to your expectations. When I decided to continue this series when heading to the gym, I was hoping it would keep me entertained for seventy long, boring walking laps around the track. Not to worry--Danny Boyle and John Ceepak to the rescue!
This is a light mystery, but very well written with some humorous, contrasting characters. The narrator, young Danny Boyle, has a lot to learn about police work--and life. And the hero of the series, John Ceepak, is a returning veteran, who lives by a code that is sadly disappearing in today's world. Crimes are solved, lessons are learned, and order is restored to Sea Haven!
Mad Mouse's narrator, Jeff Woodman, does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. I was happy to see he is the one and only narrator for this series. I'm already looking forward to installment #3--
I absolutely LOVE this series!! I've listened to them all, and I'm devastated that there aren't any more. So thoroughly enjoyable and funny. Start with the first and enjoy your way through the rest. You won't be sorry.
I mainly read mysteries, and sci-fi, sometimes with a dose of humor, and I love the BBC. I enjoy the hidden gems more than the best-sellers.
This book blended humor and suspense very successfully. The humor never seemed out of place, and it did not diminish the suspense in any way. I have found in many humorous mystery novels, the focus is too much on the humor for the story to be very suspenseful. That is not the case in this book. I found myself looking for any opportunity I could find to listen so that I could find out what was happening next. The characters are all well-drawn, and Grabenstein avoids stereotypes most of the time. Even some of the more minor characters were well fleshed out.
The most impressive aspect of this book, however, was the performance of Jeff Woodman as he read the book. He made every character very distinct and his voicing of Ceepak was brilliant. My first impression of the character was exactly how Woodman voiced him. I envisioned Patrick Warburton in that role should the series ever be filmed, and I could imagine that Warburton was reading the Ceepak dialog. (If you watched The Tick, you know what I mean.)
I recommended this book to my husband who usually listens to a different type of book, and within the first 20 minutes, he was captured, too.
Retired former magazine editor who is working harder than ever as Mr. Dad to his 14-year-old daughter.
Despite one "Roger that" too many from the book's main protagonist, I enjoyed this listen. When I purchased the book I didn't realize that it was written for a teen audience. Then again, maybe it wasn't, but that's the way it turned out. It was a sale book and since my wife grew up in the Jersey Shore setting, I thought it was worth the risk. Simple characters, a simple though somewhat contrived plot and simple dialogue make for a relaxed listen. A few years back I reread one of my Hardy Boys books to see what interested me back in my pre-teen years. One reread was enough to satisfy my nostalgia need. If you wonder what the Hardy Boys might be like dropping "F" bombs, then give this book a try. And if you're 16 years old, this author and his books are for you.
entertaining story, plus good commentary on how things can have unexpected longqq term effects
narrator did a good job with accents, voices and keeping the story flowing.
another good Ceepak novel
this is a new offer for me. I love this new often hear that I have discovered. His books are very interesting keeps you on your toes and the narrator keeps it Lively and fun. I cannot wait to hear the next book in this series.
First, the story is entertaining. I just finished Tilt a Whirl; I got the 3 books for 2 credits during the recent promotion. I like the protagonists, Danny and Sepack, the character development is satisfactory and it moves right along. Good narration, which is always a big factor, so all in all, this is a solid series with some likeable guys--and a couple real bad eggs.
An avid reader who works too much to actually read in the traditional manner she now consumes audiobooks at her job, driving, and running.
Once again, Chris Grabenstein writes another great Ceepak mystery that by all means shouldn't be as fun and interesting as it is. Although there are pitfalls in Grabenstein's characterizations and plot, I just can't bring myself to care. I enjoy the story and the two main characters far too much. It took me a span of two days to listen to this book and by the time it was done I was already downloading book 3.
🌺 Lover of Amazing Stories 🌺
Jeez! This Chris Grabenstein guy is the definition of diversity when it comes to his crime mysteries. I've listened to this series completely out of order but from the location, to the victims, to the bad guys the author is not afraid to write every type of person from all walks of life in his stories and I must commend him for that!!! I appreciate that so much. xoxo
This story had me so off balanced. I thought Hell Hole was sad and only Mind Scrambler would have me that twisted and turned around but oh no Mr. Grabenstein writes a doozie in this one too! LOL. I was not expecting who the bad guy was in this one at all. And I found myself teary eyed at some parts and unable to stop laughing at others.
Although I didn't feel as guilty laughing in this one as I did in Hell Hole or Mind Scrambler. Danny's character with Ceepak is just too hilarious. I only wish there were so many more stories with these two. I'm already dreading when I'll listen to the last audio in this series.
In this series Mr. Jeff Woodman has definitely become the 5th narrator I'm voice crushing on hard! 😍 He's fabulous as Danny and Ceepak and I love to hear all the different voices he can do for each character. He's so talented!
