This is one of my favourite Jane Austen books and Juliet Stevenson narrates this brilliantly. Having seen her play Mrs Elton in the movie adaptation of Emma I knew she would be perfect for this. I've downloaded the other Austen books that she narrates now too!
"A Lady to Rely on"
Jane Austen, witty and clever, never fails.
Juliet Stevenson brings everything she reads to life.
A perfect combination.
One of my favourite Austen books. A subtle story line that immerses you in the period. Very well narrated. A must for Austen fans.
"Austen read brilliantly"
Could listen to this many times ,it's a complete joy. Highly recommend to all Austen fans
"Miss Austen triumphs again!"
I love this story almost as much as that of thr Misses Bennett and Dashwood. :-)
I have read most of Jane Austen's novels annually since my late teens in the normal hard copy format so I know the stories really well. I therefore now choose to hear them as they are like familiar friends and can soothe me after a hard day before sleep. The timbre of Juliet Stevenson's voice lends itself beautifully to these period novels and her characterisation really draws you into the story anew. This was, most definitely a five star listen.
"A classic beautifully interpretted"
This is one of my favourite audio books so far - partly because Persuasion is one of my favourite novels of all time, but also because Juliet Stevenson reads it so beautifully.
Stevenson's rendition of Mary complaining about her 'bad luck' was so good that I almost felt sorry for her, in a way I've never done whilst reading the novel. And Anne, the heroine, never seems insipid, which is always the danger when you're a character who is always overlooked by your family, no matter how rude and foolish they are.
I started this book last Friday evening and resented having to turn it off to sleep. My family gave up trying to talk to me on Saturday until it was finished! I've since listened to it again less than a week later.
Loved it - excellent narrator with perfect character representation.
An excellent perfect audible treat!
"As fresh as the day it was written"
This book is a classic for a very good reason. It sparkles with wit and wonderful characters. It has lost none of its freshness and shows that while the clothes and manners may change, human nature is still the same. A true pleasure to listen to.
A first rate reading of an excellent novel; one of the six great works by Jane Austen
