I liked this one even better than Hunger Games. The continuation of the story, as the characters figure out who the real enemy is, was great. The end was not exactly what I had hoped for, but was so good that I was appeased. At the end of the book, I logged on immediately to get book three only to discover that it is not yet released. I am hoping that Audible picks it up as soon as it is out - Aug 24, 2010. I cannot wait to finish the story!
Absolutely fantastic!! I loved the Hunger Games, I loved Catching Fire and I cannot wait for the third book of the trilogy!! Narration was rich and full, the story is strong, complex and compelling. These are the best books I've read in 20 years -- in fact for great fiction, I put them in the same category as Pat Conroy (The Prince of Tides) and Ken Follett IPillars of the Earth) -- yes I know -- the genre's couldn't be more different -- buy hey -- a great story is a great story!!
I believe that this story was just as good, if not even better than the first. It starts where the Hunger Games pretty much left off and it was exciting to the end. I can't wait until the third book is available.
The only thing that made this book less than exceptional was the narration. The narrator made the main character sound incredibly whiney and almost like an air-head. She really didn't portray Katniss as the strong-willed young woman that I believe her to be. I had to keep imagining how she actually SHOULD sound like in order to be able to continue listening in the beginning. To be honest, I almost stopped listening after the first few chapters.
But the story held its own and after a while I got lost in the story itself and drowned out the narrator's voice.
It is a really great story and it kept me riveted.
I wasn't sure that The Hunger Games needed a sequel, boy was I surprised. I didn't expect the direction this book took. Now, I learned there is to be a third book. I can hardly wait.
Catching Fire is the second book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The book picks up after the events of The Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta have returned home after winning the Hunger Games and are attempting to adjust to life back in their District. But everything is far from good in Panem. There are rumors of a rebellion against the Capitol and Katniss has become the unwilling face of the rebellion which makes her and Peeta and everyone they love enemies of the Capitol.
I loved The Hunger Games and had very high hopes for Catching Fire - and Suzanne Collins did not disappoint. It was odd. I bought this book off Audible as soon as it came out but I kept it letting it sit on my iPod and never got around to listening to it. I had no problems postponing it while I listened to other books. But, once I started listening to it, I found it impossible to turn off. (Carolyn McCormick does an excellent job narrating this series by the way.) There were plenty of things that I saw coming in the story but that didn't detract from it all. I highly recommend this series to everybody. I eagerly anticipate the release of the third book in August 2010; however, the release will be bittersweet. Once I read the third book, I'll have reached the end of the series. Like Harry, Ron and Hermoine, I'll only be able to visit Katniss and Peeta in rereads (or fan fiction!)
Also, if you would like to explore more of Suzanne Collins' work, I advise you to give The Underland Chronicles a try. They're fantasy books also but have a very different tone than The Hunger Games. There's a lot of humor in them and they're good reads. The Underland Chronicles are also more suitable for younger audiences than The Hunger Games
This was an amazing novel. I loved the first installment in the Hunger Games Trilogy. I huger games was an interesting book with a cliff hanger at the end. I will say i was not the only fan to the book store the minute its sequel was released. I was pleasantly surprised with the Novel and found it was totally unexpected. Even after hearing the plot-line from a friend who had acquired a ARC copy of the novel i was still greatly surprised with many of the things in the novel. I overall believe this was a sequel that does not disappoint but will surprise beyond belief.
