This was one of Hemingways masterpieces and I couldn't think of a better reader than Donald Sutherland. His voice is great and his transitions from the old man to the boy to the narrator are masterful. Wonderful work !!!!!
The unconquerable spirit of man.......
Superb...One of the best I have heard on Audible and I have 80....He actually teaches one how to read this story....
More, Pretty Please :O)
This reading of The Old Man and the Sea ranks in the top quartile of books I've listened to. Of course the book itself is a classic, but Donald Sutherland's narration elevates it a notch or two. The smoky timbre of his voice and his understated delivery are a perfect match for Hemingway's laconic prose and its underlying depth. Listen to it in a distraction-free environment. You may also want to try completing it in one sitting -- it is about the length of a feature movie.
Just a simple story written by a master and narrated superbly. Hemingway wastes no words in his beautiful writing. Any writer today should study Hemingway's beautifully efficient use of words. Many or today's best selling books would be much shorter and much better.
While I'm a big fan of Ernest Hemingway, I was very disappointed by Donald Sutherland's narration. He spoke in a monotone throughout the entire book as if he read while trying to talk through a pillow. Yeah, I get that he was trying to betray the voice of an "Old Man", but is rendition was very boring. He sound as though he was extremely tired and out of breath throughout the entire book. And quite frankly, I became "tired" of listening to him.
Good question. I'm not sure. Stumbling across this unfortunate first, has caused me to select my audio books with a bit more caution. And while I do read the reviews before purchasing any audio book, (because at times they are extremely helpful), the reviews for "The Old Man and the Sea" was way off base. However, as they say "a person's perspective is their own reality". In this manner, I can't say I saw the same vision as the other satisfied listeners. Sorry, it just wasn't happening for me.
His voice was very monotone and did not have any variation. And at times I could not differentiate between when the boy was speaking versus the old man. I think I may have enjoyed the book better if I had read it in print myself. I love, love, love, Hemingway, so my standards are pretty high when someone takes on the task of reading his beautiful work. And Donald Sutherland with a voice like that, would have been great for reading bed time stories to children I'll give him that but, not to the mature adult crowd of the Hemingway followers.
The book was a classic! However, the narration ruined it for me. I couldn't bring myself to even finish listening. I had to fast forward the audio to the end of the book just to hear the ending, because it just didn't get there quick enough for me. It just draaaaaag along. (Caution! Do not listen to this audio while driving or operating any heavy machinery.) Redeeming qualities? Hmmm the metaphors were superb! Life vs. Nature and all that. ;)
My introduction to Hemingway guided by Sutherland's voice was an enjoyable experience .
I will be looking at more Hemingway , He seems to know his fishing .
I am fairly sure I got this for around $6 during a special or a "buy on get one free"
$11 is too much
It is really exciting to hear this being read, which allows more imagination that if I were reading it myself.
As always Hemmingway has a way with words and this arguably is my favourite of his words. This story touched my heart and soul and hearing it was even better than reading it (which I last did many years ago). My partner and I listed to this while driving down Hwy 1 into Key West and it was magic. Although I was crying so hard I could hardly see (thankfully I wasn't the one driving) this book set the tone for an amazing vacation which I believe we enjoyed more as a result of listening to this en route.
Donald Sutherland has a captivating voice and truly seems to make the deeper meaning of this story come alive through the way he tells it.

My first listen to a Hemmingway novel. So well written, the story kept me so involved and I was truly awed by how well he conveys a thought.
His voice quality and the style he brings to this novel actually makes this book even better!
This is a very short listen and you won't be disappointed!
I listen to this book once every 6 months or so. The Story is elegant and humbling! Donald Sutherland's voice and tone is very powerful for this book. This is a must buy!!!
This book makes me remember just how we are all human and how we can all achieve great things.
