I read this story many decades ago and today I listened to the audio narrated by Donald Sutherland. Unlike the first time, it made a profound impression on me today as I appreciated it more. Maybe it is because I am on the water on my boat as I listened to each of Hemingway's descriptive words. Or, maybe it's because I am older. What I know is that the sound of Sutherland's voice brought the story to life. I was there when the old man set out to sea longing to catch a big fish. I felt the excruciating pain he felt when his hands were cut by the line, felt the heat of the sun on my neck, and the hunger pangs in my gut. I also felt the joy of victory when he caught the fish and when it finally lost it's struggle and died. And then the profound feeling defeat and sadness as the fish was devoured before his eyes. Tears ran down my cheeks when he landed on the shore and through the end. This is a true, timeless, masterpiece.
Donald Sutherland was by far the best Reader that I have ever listened to. The book was every emotion wrapped up together.
Narration was a lil jolty at first but within a chapter or two it was fabulous - the perfect tempo, intonations etc for the story. The story was suspenseful, engaging and deeply moving. Left me feeling the characters' experience - loneliness, suffering, desperation, hope.
Beautiful story, masterfully read. Was not expecting to be so captivated by a simple story. Hemingway definitely had talent for telling a story.
i liked the symbolism of youth and aging. the struggle with life in old age symbolized by the fish.
This is a good reading with good sound and recording. A classic tale.
My first Hemingway, and I find myself wondering if I would have provided the required prospective to pass some stuffed shirts expectations?
I found myself conflicted in the end. The ending was still a surprise as I expected a different ending.
I have to add that Donald may not have made his bread and butter doing this, but he can read me a story anytime. I teared up a couple of times; was it the story or Donald?
Excellent narration and production. I listen as I travel and I can always tell how great the story is by how long I sit and listen after I've reached my destination .
