I loved this book. I especially loved the reader, Gabra Zackman. She really brought the book to life, had great character voices, had a wonderful voice. She was just perfect for this book.
If you're looking for something delightful and fun, this is the book for you.
One of my biggest pet peeves about audiobooks is the ability(or lack of ability) of the reader to play different parts(male and female). Many books with lots of characters have an entire cast. This book, and the two that follow, are read by one woman. SHE IS AMAZING.
I'm currently listening to the third book in the series and I am still wowed by her abilities.
I enjoyed Poison Study--enough to want to read the second one. Magic Study is even better. There is magic, well-described characters, lots of action(moreso in the second book), and tons of novel ideas. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good fantasy story.
I normally don't like female readers as much, but this one is pretty awesome. This book flew by so fast and I didn't want it to end. They did a very good job of not exposing too much of the story at a time and kept me guessing throughout. There was also just enough touch of magic that didn't seem unrealistic. I highly recommend.
I was very pleased with this story. Unknown author to me. The narrator was not necessarily bland, just soft... but by the fist 1/4 of the book it really became part of the story. The characters were intriguing and interesting. Author created a new world with familiar things, but customs were different. A very interesting adventure with a plausable plot. I hope there is a sequel.
I waited several weeks before I got this book. Something perked my interest and I kept returning. I usually read Grisham, Baldacci, Very few Stephen King (Green Mile, Ann Rand, Robert Ludlum, Crichton etc. I read very little science fiction, fantasy etc. as I have never been able to finish one.
This was totally different for me. My only disappointment is that there are no more books by this author. Hopefully the sequel ( there has to be one ) will be with the same reader. I doubt if it would be the same without her. Frank Muller is my favorite male reader. Gabra Zackman will easily become another favorite.
I was so taken with this author, I did a Google search for her home page. I wanted to know more about her.
No hints about the story. Take your time reading it as you will be empty when it is over and wish you had read ( listened ) more slowly. I wish I could encourage the author not to rush writing the sequel.
Liked this story. It was a little slow to start but turned out to be real interesting. I have bought the others inthe sereis to contiue the story. Well developed characters with interesting twists.
I got this one for free on a BOGO sale and didn't really expect much from it. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the plot and liked the main character.
The story itself has an intriguing premise but the author is not up to the task. The writing is stilted and simplistic. The characterizations sometimes feel like the fantasy novel they should be, and other times read like they are from a pulp-romance novel. The story veers from its most intriguing set-up: a condemned prisoner getting the job of food-taster because it doesn't matter if they die from poison... and then branches out unnecessarily into magic and other elements that the writer doesn't have a feel for. Sophomoric is the word that comes to mind. The reader doesn't help -- she is corny, "acting" every moment, and it comes off like bad regional theater.
Love a great book that stays with you long after you've finished it.
Even though it wasn't quite what I had anticipated I found this book entertaining, interesting, yet unpredictable, nice when you can't guess what is coming next. The narrator does a great job, wonderful use of her voice for the different characters. This one was worth my credit so I downloaded the following two books in the series; Magic Study and Fire Study and did not like them nearly as well as this book. You may like them if you enjoyed the fighting scenes in Poison Study as the next two books are filled with them!
Once started, I did not want to push the pause button on my player. The story draw me in and I could not help to wonder what happen next to the characters. The story was not predictable as some fiction stories. I am already almost finish the Magic Study and can't wait to start the third of this series.
