I am a huge fan of romances and happy endings. I like books that take me away from everyday life and into the land of romance, some adventure and of course happy endings.
"Good Listen but missed the humor"
The book kept me interested from beginning to end and my hats off to the narrator. Anna Fields is a hard act to follow and I missed her. The humor seems to be missing that I am used to finding in SEP books. I enjoyed the book and hope that in her next release the author finds her sense of humor again.
"RIP-OFF!!!!!!!"
I am combining this review with Glitter Baby to save myself the aggravation of repeating myself.
Seriously, when is SEP going to stop ripping off the headlines? I am (and after this book might change that to a "was") a fan of SEP ever since
Ain't She Sweet, but after reading this I don't know what I feel anymore. She released this about the same time she re-released "Glitter Baby" and I mistakenly (BIG TIME) downloaded both of them at the same time.
I don't want to admit to my age, but I'll admit to my Hollywood curiosity when I say SEP totally RIPPED OFF Hollywood scandals for Glitter Baby. Look up Clark Gable/Loretta Young's secret daughter if you don't belive me. And she came dangerously close to ripping off Lana Turner's scandal when she wrote about Glitter Baby's stepfather Alexi. I was waiting for the climatic stab scene, but SEP went in another direction. A sucky direction at that. I was left with a feeling of "That's it?!?!?!!"
Now she has blantantly ripped off the Brangelina vs Jennifer Aniston scandal for What I Did For Love. If I wanted to read about that crap, I'd pick up a tabloid. She obviously has a certain opinion of the Brangelina scandal and used the book to voice it.
She rushed the end because she didn't know where to go with it. Did she seriously think what the hero did to win the heroine was romantic?!? The video? How stupid was that? It's pretty damn sad when the hottest scene in the whole book was between the father and the ex-publicist in the front seat of a car. I could have cared less about Georgie and whats his name. I wanted more of the dad and the publicist.
I'm disgusted. I wish I could get my credits back and read something else.
SEP needs to get back to what she does best. And she needs to find a different narrator. No offense to the current reader, but she just can't capture the true character. Her voice never changes.
"Love always prevails!"
I really enjoyed this "book". There was more going on in the story besides the main characters. It makes you think the frog can turn in to a prince. Well worth the credit.
"The cleanest my house has ever been"
I loved this book and couldn't stop listening to it. I used the time to clean parts of my house that haven't been clean in years! I was saddened when I heard the dedication to Anna Fields and following some research learned that she had passed away. Ms. Fields brought so much life to SEP's books, but Julia Gibson is a worthy succesor.
"Another winner"
I just couldn't turn it off. I loved this story.
"SEP is still my favorite author!"
I loved this book, in fact I have listened to it many times since I downloaded it in January. I just read the other reviews and I was shocked to see how many people didn't like it. I have been a fan of SEP since I listened to her first recorded book IT HAD TO BE YOU. I have loved them all. I've listened to them all more than once, but WIDFL might be my favorite. I listened to it when I first purchased it and enjoyed it very much. I've left it on my i-pod, and take it to bed with me every night to listen to until I fall asleep. I loved the story, the characters Georgie and Bram, and the secondary characters. As far as SEP using the concept of the Brangelina/Aniston breakup, who cares? Writers do that sort of thing all the time. Did you ever watch Law & Order? Most of their stories are ripped from the headlines. Lastly the narrator...no one could ever replace Anna Fields/Kate Fleming. She was great. But I thought Julia Gibson did a very good job and I enjoyed her narration.
"Enjoyable"
This isn't going to win any Pulitzers or change any lives, but I found it to be enjoyable enough. I agree with some other sentiments that it wasn't exactly like I was just dying to hear what happened next, but I also wasn't reluctant to hear more. It definitely made my commute more enjoyable, and that is what counts.
"Disappointed"
This is the second book that I have really, really not like from Ms. Phillips - I have all her books, and I have enjoyed all of them up until these last two. My favorites have been Aint She Sweet and Natural Born Charmer. I bought Glitter Baby and actually hated it. Now this one which has almost no plot or depth to it at all. Even the sex seemed sleezy. I hope this is now what her future books will be like.
"Can't go wrong with Susan Elizabeth Phillips"
Always engaging books, and this one is no exception. I agree that Anna Fields narration was the best - and in fact, this book is dedicated to her. Her death was a real loss for audio book listeners.
"What happened?"
I just finished listening to Natural Born Charmer and actually laughed out loud several times. Imagine my surprise when I downloaded "What I Did For Love." What Happened? I realize that part of the problem was not having Anna Fields/Kate Fleming narrate, but there was no humor in this story. It's like two different people wrote this and "Natural Born Charmer." I have heard that her older books have more humor in them and will probably stick to those and not bother with any new titles.
