This was a very enjoyable romance, murder mystery, ghost story and historical fiction. I liked the fact that the author managed to bring so many elements together. The characters were very likeable too. The narration was good. This was the first work of fiction that I listened to, that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Native Californian, but lived in TX for 2.5 yrs where I joined a neighborhood book club and never looked back! I listen and read books! After 5 years of raving about audiobooks, I finally got my husband hooked!
Jodi always takes on controversial topics in her books. This one takes on Eugenics, past and present, but she weaves it into a "ghost" story. How do you get Eugenics and the Paranormal into a cohesive story? Well, she does it here. I'll admit some of the Paranormal stuff seemed a little "Hollywood", but not over the top. The real interesting topic, however, was the history behind Vermont's sterilization act in the 1930's of the insane, invalid, weak, degenerates, and general "undesirables" of Vermont society, which included the Abenaki Indians (who were not recognized by the Govt.). She parallels this just a bit with modern day Genetic manipulation with infertile couples. It isn't preachy tho. Overall, a good story. Not on par with My Sister's Keeper or Nineteen Minutes, but a good story nonetheless.
I have read at least four of Ms. Picoult's books and really enjoyed them. Even after reading this one I have to say she can tell a story that keeps you listening/reading to the end. This selection is a strange combination of ghost story, science fact, science fiction, history, wildly-fictional imagination, anthropology review, love story, loss story, and (did I mention?) ghost story. It is mildly entertaining and the narration is brilliant. As a previous reviewer mention it is packed with every simile Ms. Picoult ever jotted into a notebook as something to use some day. All round, an odd book. I'm glad it wasn't the first of hers I'd ever read because I probably never would have tried the others which deserve higher rating.
There were a few moderately interesting stretches in this book, but the plot was largely implausible and the characters unconvincing (not to mention whiny).

I had read My Sisters Keeper and had looked forward to this one. Plus, I had read some reviews by persons who had liked other books I had liked. ( I link to the reviewer's lists of books to find new ideas for books. I am doing reviews to contribute to this database).
3 hours was all I could take of this. No characters had grabbed my empathy (unlike My Sister's Keeper), and the story was flat. Other reviewers are more articulate in analyzing writing styles. I have been spoiled by some great Audible books, so perhaps I am getting picky .
I read Plain Truth and My Sisters Keeper before giving Second Glance a look. Tales of the supernatural immediately raise my "I'm not going to like this" alarm, but you know - it was my favorite book of the three. Very enjoyable. I thought the length of the story was just fine and it ended when it should have. I am sure I will read this book again.
This story was amazing. I found the characters to be believable and was so immersed in the story I was moved to tears. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to hear a truly good book.
The book was generally entertaining with some engaging characters but the narration was uneven and the voicings were more distracting than illuminating. The story went on too long culminating in an improbable ending.
I have been a member of Audible since 2005 or longer. I have well over 475 books in my library. I love to listen to my books when I am working out and driving.
I did listen to this entire book by Jodi Picoult, but was disappointed from the start. Perhaps I will give this book another chance since I like most of her work! First of all, I did NOT need to know that "Jodi Picoult received an AB from Princeton or has a MA from Harvard"... Hearing that made me think that this author was trying to make herself appear "better than the rest of us and better than other authors..." Just write a great story for us Readers/Listeners! I cannot really say much about this book because it was boring... It is a great one to fall to sleep with if you have insomnia!
