Only got one third of my way through it. If I liked ghost stories and make believe this would have been very enjoyable.
I'm a mom of a busy 10 year old daughter, manage a demanding career and depending on my morning read during my commute to improve my happiness!
Loved this story - never predictable, refreshingly well told tale, twists and turns aplenty that never ceased to surprise. Definitely recommend for anyone who appreciates well crafted fiction. A combination ghost story, historical fiction, and tale of redemption.
I very much enjoyed this story. Stick with it to the end, and you will be pleased!
I usually enjoy Jodi Picoult's books and love George Guidall's narration. But this was one of the most disappointing I have read. I really tried to finish this book at least three times, sure that there was something important I was missing, but couldn't do it. Story was extremely complicated, depressing and I hated all the suicide. I am sorry I paid attention to other reviews and wasted my money on this one.
One of the best
Ross because he believed in ghosts
This is my first
Ethan. He had so much to cope with and he was so brave
There were loads of strong characters in this story. Jodi Picoult is a great author and George Guidell is a great storyteller.
This is in my top 10% EXCELLENT!
YES! I never knew what was going to happen or how it was going to end. So many different twists and turns. So much historical information on subjects that are well buried in US history!
All of them!
Not in one sitting... but I could not put this book down!
Simply one of her best!
She takes sometimes difficult subject matter blended with complicated characters and pulls the reader deep into their internal lives. The prose is good enough I'll probably buy the book for reference. About mid way through I had my doubts it could all be pulled together, but like a true craftsperson the pieces came together organically in the end. For the reader an emotional roller coaster that doesn't disappoint (assuming one likes roller coasters because you must keep your eyes, or ears, open on this one).
I could listen to George Guidall read instruction manuals. He's one of the best.
For anyone out there that buys based on the number rating I give the following observation. The closer an author comes to lasting literature the stronger the opinions become across the board, ending in average to below average ratings. I suggest always ignore the score and purchase from the reviews.
Tell us about yourself!
I loved this book from the first time I read it. It is a great combination of ethics, mystery, history, and romance. I live in Vermont, and have lived in New England all my life, but this taught me a side of local history I didn't know.
Don't be thrown off by the fact that it is a 'ghost story" because it is not a typical spooky tale. In fact, according to the notes in the book, the author worked with TAPS (of TV Ghost Hunters fame) before they became well known.
My one suggestion to a listener is to make sure that you have the time to pay attention, because there are multiple story lines and it can be a little confusing in the beginning. It is worth getting into it and of course, you know it will all come together by the end (and in more ways than I had expected).
I have read this book more than once, and the audible version was wonderful - the narrator did a great job.
Who ever heard of eugenics??? I never did - not in Vermont! This was a good story - a love story, a ghost story, suspence and mystery, and you learn something to boot! George Guidell -if you read this.... you are my all time favorite reader. You have such a warm, compassionate, easy-to-listen-to voice. I have listened to you so many times, that I feel we know each other. You ride with me in the car all the time. Don't worry though - I'm a good driver :-) Great Book. Great Narration.
