Jodi Picoult is usually so gripping, grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go. I can follow lots of characters in a book. Often I was like Huh? Who? Not a bad book, but Vanishing Act, Nineteen Minutes, Change of Heart, not even subjects I would have chosen but just awesome.
This was my first Jodi Picoult book - and definitely not my last. Ghost stories generally don't interest me, but this one was laced with a great story line. If all her books are this captivating, I can hardly wait to read the next one.
I am an educated Southerner, plowing through books at the speed of light. I love good stories, good coffee, and good conversation.
This is one my favorite books by this author. The characters are so three-dimensional, so imperfect, so believable. I love the fact that the story is based on real history too. I'm not usually into ghost stories, but this one's a winner. It's so good that it might just be too good for some, with it's definite "Happy ever after" ending. But don't we all wish life was a little more tidy anyway? I don't mind a little happiness myself.
This was an enchanting listen that was able to keep me interested. The plot was a little predictable, but not entirely. I loved how the author was able to tell this story with its many layers yet keep it as real as could be expected.
I put this one on my wish list, because I love a good ghost story, but I put off reading it for awhile, due to the description about a man who wants to die because his beloved was killed. I was afraid it'd be too sad. Boy, am I glad I finally downloaded it! The characters were well developed, and I thoroughly enjoyed the intricasies of the sub-plots and the way they wove around each other, little by little leading us to the final truth. Also, I really love a story that is woven around historical facts, such as this one was with the whole "eugenics" movement. I was shocked to find that that part of the story was true, and can't believe it actually happened here. Some may say that the story came together just a little to neatly, and with a few too many coincidences, but I loved it!
I enjoyed the story, but the reader was too slow at points in the book. He paused and I thought the book was changing chapters or parts. I probably would not order an audiobook done by this reader again. He did get better as the book progressed, but again I found myself thinking "get on with it" several times at the beginning of the book.
This is hands down one of the very best books I have listened to..ever! I enjoyed it from the first word to the last. The characters are easily believable and loveable. The way the story goes twisting and turning and unexpectantly coming together in the end is amazing. You will not be dissapointed with this book.
