The strength and persistence of the Holocaust victims' determination to survive is beyond words. If put to the test, I don't know if I would have that strength. I pray this part of history will never repeat itself.
This is not just another Holocaust story. The author's writing and prose is as superior as any literary work. There are a few negative reviews with regard to the narration. I found the narrator perfect for the story. She was in no way dry or unemotional. She was awesome. Almost a female Scott Brick. Scott Brick is known for his subtle emotional narrations. It's his calling card. I will put Grace Conlin in that category. Do not fear purchasing this book because of the narrator. She is perfect pairing for this story.
the beauty of words even discibing great evil
life winning through against all odds
the will to survive death Not to blame God for forsaken her and her people
Near perfect,a download of a map would have been nice. One was left with the story of will. Reading was done very detached. The agony was not overplayed. It would be nice to know if she still had faith
I know people who were friends with Gerda and Kurt. What remarkable people and story of pure endurance and perseverance. I read a lot of this time period and forever am deeply touched by the cruelty of humans to humans, but also the opposite. This story will stay with me always.
Probably when Gertrude met the American man who became her husband. She spoke of him with such pride. It made me as a listener happy to feel her relief that she was saved.
Surviving Hitler's Rule
Maybe someone new to audible who hasn't heard the terrific narrators on here.
Maybe reading the book since it has such great reviews but not on audible with this narrator.
Almost anyone else
Disappointment since I couldn't stand listening to it, so couldn't finish the book. Only made it through the first 45 mins or so.
This is an old audio book that was converted to a digital file, with mixed results. Save you rmoney.
