I really enjoyed this book by, Nevada Barr. “Bittersweet”, is told with such vivid, and rich texture. The reader is transported back to a time when being a woman was not all that pleasant. However sad, and heartbreaking, the story may be, the love between Imogene and Sara is so powerful and real, the listener can not help but be pulled into the love. I strongly recommend this book. You will be richly rewarded with memories of strength, and love that can not be denied.
I wasn't sure about this one, but it was one of the best I've listened to!! Not a fan of westerns either, but this was great! Highly recommended!
As a Nevada Barr fan, I expected the book to be good, but I was pleasantly surprised at how engrossing and touching it was. It gives you an intimate view of what life was like for women in the old west, and a touching view of the price being different must have carried in that era. Ms. Barr's best writing yet.
Nevada Barr's ability to describe the scenery as well as the womens thoughts and feelings are impecable! Although I still "want more" I can also find an ending that is acceptable in my own mind. Great book!
This was a wonderful love story that clearly showed how powerless women could be and how terrible it was if a woman married men that saw women as property. The characters were well developed. It is a book that will need to be listened to many times to fully appreciate the author's art in writing.
This book was hard to get into at the beginning. But, about half way through it picked up. I didn't particularly like the ending, but I found that the book haunted me. I actually missed the characters when I had finished the book. I wanted to know more about them and continue with the story. The author seemed to spend too much time telling stories that didn't relate to the overall idea of the book. The author was able to make me feel for and care about the characters. Even though I thought she took too much time telling the story. I would recommend it.
I am a life long student. I love to study and learn and I enjoy factual books but also well research novels. At age 75 I have read lots.
The teacher who had so much to deal with in her life and lived it so true to herself
I loved the change they made when the farm hand died
this book is so heartwarming because these characters were able to overcome so much and I loved all the descriptions of the Stage Coach Stop. It held my total focus and it covered a vast array of characters.
Wife, mom of one amazing son, and I have the second best job in the world, working in a bookstore :)
unexpected, thought provoking, and heart warming
The first hint of mutual attraction between Imogene and Sarah
When they moved away.
I got teary eyed a few times.
It is hard to imagine the difficulties people went through before acceptance has become the norm.
A delightful surprise to find the story of two women and their loving relationship set in the wild west in the 1870's. Lots of twists and turns, unexpected directions, and had me completely engrossed from start to finish. Obviously the author had done her homework well - history records many such relationships after the Civil War, and she has brought the characters to life beautifully. Equally brought to life by Linda Stephens reading the book, warm and characterfilled. What a pity there arent more like this!
