This series gives one more of a look into a character who figures prominently in the Outlander series. Lord John turns out to be a quite lovable person on the whole.
Substance. The book is very dry and reads more like a footnote.
I did not enjoy this book on any level and felt myself laboring just to finish it.
Disappointment, not in the story, but because it lacked a story.
An ardent fan of Gabaldon’s Outlander series, I am very disappointed with the first book in the Lord John series. The storyline lacks any real substance lending itself more toward a footnote than a separate series in its own right. Unfortunately, the timing of the writing did not permit this option. Narration is excellent and easy to understand. Wish I could recommend this book, but I can’t.
The John Story is a massive deviation from the Outlander series / journey. The stories, although using the same names, really does not do the original stories justice. This should be advertised as a separate story completely, and not be leveraging the Outlander name. This may be your “cup of tea”, just know it is vastly different.
It had next to nothing to do with the Outlander series
I was not ready for the tone of the book. I have listened to the entire series 3 times. I think this is more a personal experience than anything the narrator contributed.
This was a different side of Lord John we do not see in the Outlanders stories. It was a good back ground book with a good puzzle to solve.
I have really enjoyed The Outlander series, though even in those excellent books the frequency and location of some sex scenes was a bit much. (On a rock in the middle of a river? Really?) However, this book is over the top with graphic descriptions of sex. I did not finish listening and will not buy any more of her books.
This was the worst book I have ever tried to read or listen to. I have read books by this author in the past but I will not waste my time or money on her again.
After listening to this audio book for about an hour, I determined that it was just too weird and perverted for my taste. I deleted it from my I-touch and will get it off my computer since I have no interest in trying to listen to it again. I only gave it one star because I had to do something with the stars--not because I thought it worthy of a star at all.
Of course I love the author and her Outlander series and wanted more and this story delivered. Taken from one of the Outlander characters, it has a nice story and makes you laugh out loud. I enjoyed it and would recommend to you.
Hmmm, difficult. I love Diana Gabaldon. This work was not her best. Narrator did a fine job but the constant conversation and mystery plot does not start my engine. I never figured out why I care why this O'connell guy got murdered. I can't wait till her next Outlander series book comes out this fall, but Lord John will have to stick to the other series to be interesting.
I just couldn't make myself care about any of the characters, here. All seemed quite shallow, and plot was completely a mystery-who-dun-it - not my genre. Was hoping for something more in terms of character development & adventure, e.g. Outlander series....~sigh~
