This is really a four-star book. The High Druid of Shannara series is turning out to be the best effort by Brooks since the Scions of Shannara series. The characters are well-developed, the story intricate and quickly paced. Paul Boehmer, however, is a terrible narrator and the reason I lowered the rating to three stars. His reading is passionless and mediocre at best. Where the Scott Brick, narrator of the previous volume, used various accents to give each charcter some sort of individuality, Boehmer does little more than raise or lower his voice. He definately ruined an otherwise good story. I hope they can get Brick for the next volume.
new heros emerge to answer threats and edges of a all encompassing dark plot to unlease horrors on the world.
I am currently listening to this book. I have only started listening to Terry Brooks novels a few months ago. I am very pleased with Terry Brooks and Scott Brick. But this books narrator is horrible. Not nearly as clear speaking as Scott Brick. I almost stopped listening but I can't only out of respect for Terry Brooks. I only wish it was Scott reading it to me.
The writing quality is consistantly good in all of Terry Brooks' efforts. I was hesitant to purchase the book because I really like Scott Brick as narrator and was not sure I would like the transition to Paul Boehmer. I was right. While Paul Boehmer's voice is not unpleasant, the difference in the voices is a huge distraction from the story for me. I keep listening for the inflections/tonal quality in the other volumes and not hearing them. I believe that it is a mistake to switch narrators in the middle of a series. I will probably purchase book 3, but under protest and only becasue I want all the books in the series on Audio.
I wanted to write a quick review to say that I was at first dismayed to find that Scott Brick was not narrating Tannequil and Straken, however, after listening to both, I have to say that I think the new guy is GREAT! There are times (as has been said) where his character voices change or overlap, so it's confusing, but overall, I think he adds so much drama and suspense, that he's in fact better than Brick. Don't get me wrong, Scott Brick has a certain feel to his narration that I love, but after the initial shock, I'm grateful for the change. Oh, and the book is great too.
I have to say this reader is much better then the last one. He reads the book and does so without out any goofy inflections on words. After struggling through the last reader I was a little leery to continue on in the series. However once I heard this new reader it was a pleasure to read the book. Great book great reader cant wait till the next one
