I couldn't get past disk one, couldn't tell where it was going and by that point, didn't care. McDonald's isn't health food - a huge surprise. Maybe it's better in paperback, it was awful on audio.
WARNING: Extremely good chance this book make a vegetarian out of you.
This work is an essential read to understanding both the strengths and weaknesses of this quintessential American industry. There is a dark underbelly to Happy Meals and Bacon Western Cheeseburgers, and it is weirder and more brutish than you can imagine. Even from the perspective of a conservative Republican like myself, this industry is badly in need of reform.
A great book, really an eye-opener on the fastfood world. Although this is clearly a liberal view point, the author appears to have completed extensive reasearch on the subject matter. He urges us not to purchase food from the giant fastfood corporations but what about all of the uneducated workers the fastfood corporations support? I guess we would have to let them starve.
I was hoping this book would talk more about issues of health, the shift in eating habits, and cultural changes related to fast food. However, this book is little more than socialist propaganda. It talks about how evil McDonalds is for paying minimum wage, how terrible the big food companies are for putting the little farms/ranches out of business, and how the big wigs at Coke-Cola are capitalist pigs for wanting people to drink more of their soft drinks.
If you want some good old Reagen-bashing, capitalism is evil, the sole-less corporation is out to get you-type reading this may be for you. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
