I wish Mr. Child had done his research. There were just too many glaring absurdities. Armadillos protected in Texas?! Driving 60 miles to the nearest grade school? 3 hired hands who do absolutely nothing and sleep in? Ranch owners that are all evil, lazy and sit on their hands? ONE truck on a ranch? I got tired of hearing how HOT it is in Texas in the summer. The people just didn't act or re-act like most country folk would.
I cringed at the way the legal system was depicted. No police officer is going to leave a little kidnapped girl with a drifter overnight to await the return of her mother. Unbeliveable situations like this just ruined the book.
The author is obviously a city boy who never bothered to visit a working Ranch. I have loved the Reacher series but you HAVE to have a little realit yand logic in the story! This book didn't show Reacher as being extra intelligent or tough, it just made everyone else in the book lazy idiots.
Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote.
I can't think of one.
Yes! I do love the charactor and Dick Hill does an amazing job. But I would hope the author would take a little more time to do his research and develope charactors in the next book.
Just trying to figure out why Mr. Child let them cast Tom Cruise as Reacher in the movie. Another bad decision.
Probably not. I didn't like it nearly as much as the earlier Reacher or the later Reacher books. This one was a bit flat. I mean what woman would pick up someone that looked like Reacher? Not a very smart one yet Carmen picked him up and then took him home. And he being Jack and having nothing more than his toothbrush, went along with her. It was just not a great book. Sorta like Lee Child threw in stuff just to get it over with.
In this book I think my favorite character was Ellie. She seemed to have it all together while her mother and Jack just seemed to stumble along.
Yes. I have listened to many of his performances. He does this one fine but he just doesn't have the material to work with. He is a terrific narrator.
Yes. I thought it was too long and the story was not very believable. But, having said that I listened to it and liked the ending best of all. Maybe it was because that finally Jack got to investigated and slap someone around.
I rank it high
I don't know that I can. Jack Reacher novels are mysteries with a touch of military, a touch of police authority and a touch of vigilante.
Depends on the book.
Single mom of two BEAUTIFUL girls and working full time. Never enough hours in the day for myself. Loving Audible!
Just when I thought I'd figured out what was happening it took a turn! This book kept me guessing from then on. Awesome delivery and great story line with many twists.
I enjoy listening to Action Adventure books during my daily, (45 + mins) commute to work.
I usually listen to a series from the begging to the end, one after the other but this time I broke and listened to something else which I will not name...and after listening to this one I will be listening to the next Reacher, Reaches next adventure. I like the heroic action's of a character and enjoyed listening to Reacher figure out who the "Bad Guy" was and where they were. I am glad I didn't skip this one.
I like Reacher books. They're not literature but they're fun and filled with vengeance fetish. This was my 5th Reacher, first via audiobook.
The story is pretty boring and takes a very long time to get going. Biggest flaw is that unlike in other Reacher books, you never really learn why you should care about the person Reacher is fighting for, other than the fact she's got a kid. But like they say in the book, everybody's got a kid.
The narrator really killed it for me. His female voices are all whiny, and a borderline insulting portrayal of women.
And maybe it's because this is an earlier book, before Child improved his writing. Or maybe it's because my brain is able to skip the phrase when reading it (instead of listening) but...if I hear the phrase "Reacher said nothing" one more time, I'm going to snap. It is spoken literally dozens of times, possibly over 100. Lee, you don't need to tell the reader that the character says nothing, you just don't write them saying anything!
OK to listen while driving, but annoying on another level (whining women and children characters)
Speed it up a bit. Slow moving. Omit some unnecessary narrative.
I like Dick Hill, but not his women voices. But I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Scott Brick.
The Rock should play Jack Reacher.
Perhaps multiple narrators when women's voices are required. Don't fire Dick Hill. He is still one of the best.
I'm not sure that I will continue with this series because this book spoiled it for me. Jack Reacher has no substance and is a know-it-all. Even if he was a military cop this is stretching it. In the other books he know enough to solve problems, stumbling a but, but is not a physic and mind reader.
I liked the story of this book, though it was a bit slow to engage me in the beginning. Once the pieces start to fall together I had to find out what was going on! Reacher is such a hard, somewhat dry character, but I find myself loving him for his bad boy but moral style.
