Audio edition seems to pull you into the story. I "read" it at the gym and did a whole lot more cardio time because I was engaged in the story.
I found that I really loved listening to this book by Francine Rivers, and author who I had never read before. If not for the high amount of readers, and the fantastic ratings, I probably would not have searched out such a book. The book, nor the series, did not disappoint! Highly recommended, great writing and research! I learned alot!
This book is not my usual download. I usually listen to Kellerman, Baldacci, Flynn, Child etc... It came reccommended from a couple girls I work with and I was hesitant to give a Christian book a try. I have to say that it has become one of my favorite books of all time. The story is moving and the charachters inspiring. It's not a goody-goody book and really keeps you interested. Richard Ferrone remains one of my favorite narrators and does a great job with this book. You should plan on immediately downloading the second in the series "Echo in the darkness", to get the full impact of the story.
This book is a brilliant fusion of fictitious characters and scripture. Rivers weaves a brilliant unexpected story around sound doctrine and history. It leaves you with a better understanding of the culture and impediments the early church had to endure while leaving you stunned at how Jesus works...His ways are higher than our ways.
The first three chapters are a little hard to read but stick with it...by chapter 4 you won't be able to put it down. I can't wait to read the next one in the series. One of my all time favorites!
one of my favorite books of all time. the whole series is awesome start with this one and keep going. it really tugs at your heart. its a great read and listen! narrator is awesome too.
I'm a huge fan of Christian books, but this one spent soooo much time detailing one of the main character's conversions that I ended up listening to a 20 minute sermon, instead of the plot, story, and characters I had hoped to her from. No dialogue, no flashbacks--nothing but this one character going on and on and on about coming to Jesus. I'm a very devout woman, but come on already!
Francine Rivers is a riviting author. She takes real events from the bible and spins a wonderful story around the facts. Very enjoyable to listen to. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the Bible and enjoys fictional characters bringing the Bible to life.
This was an amazing book, written very well by Ms. Rivers. It stirred me spiritually, and educated me of a time period I have, before now, been uninformed about. I think that some readers may appreciate this little heads up, though: don't expect to feel all warm and fuzzy at the conclusion of this literary work. Although overall it was a magnificent listen, I have to confess I was devastated at the ending. Admittedly, I am a great fan of traditional happy endings, where everything is neatly tied together, all questions are answered, and the result is a feeling of contentment. I do not like to cry at the end of a great book, and feel like all the hope was just sucked out of me. I understand why the author ended things the way she did, but I still didn't like it. It's kind of like the movie "Titanic"; you knew how things would end, but you still clung desperately to the belief that they would end better. However, I still strongly recommend this book as a great listen. It was compelling, causing me feel to feel some powerful emotions, and I cherish the fact that I could really identify with most of these characters created by the author.
This is one of the most remarkable books I have ever "read". The author, in her unique way of teaching the Word, has woven a tapestry of real spiritual battle using the very blood of Jesus as the underlying thread. She has created characters set in ancient Rome which can easily be transferred into any life of any reader. Using these characters, she has demonstrated the realness of the spiritual battle we are each enthralled in today. My complete applause and gratitude for such a gift as this novel, given by one of our most talented authors today!
I guess that means its a five star book. It is filled with love, evil, kindness, brutality, loyalty, weakness and more. A book with no bad language and sex scenes only alluded to. After getting used to the Roman names, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. There is sequel, but I think this book stands well enough alone.
