I had a great deal of trouble trying to follow the story line! After restarting this "tell" three times it was unquestionable that this book is/was NOT for me. Or my delicate intellect/ psyche!
However the reader was, as usual, GREAT!
beautifully narrated, complex story of espionage. a new character you can love. you might need maps and to make notes to follow. nice resolution at the end.
Retired father of two with 4 grandchildren. I listen to my books while driving or flying off to somewhere. Keeps me up to date.
It is long, wordy, rich with humour and a sense of the intrigue that led to the beginning of WW II. Spy networks, intrigue and the life of a wanderer in pre-war Europe. Listen in small bits to let it flow slowly.
Fiction...yes, regarding verse; no, regarding chapter... Remarkable, terse, poignant unblinding of pre- WW2 German/Soviet "conspiracy", arguably unacknowledged, between the 2 greatest (at least in body counts in the 20th century) malevolents of all time...From Rapallo to Molotov/Ribbentrop. No way this is less than a perfect 5. So much info for reflection about the power of charismatic individuals to control the masses, and for the rest of us to stand, strongly. I'm hooked... Onto the Polish Soldier.
I enjoyed this book. However, the story, the characters, and the embedded history are sufficiently complex that I would have liked to have the written version as a crutch. I needed to go back and reread sections, which is always challenging in the audio format.
First writes a superb account of the life and loves of a Jewish Russian journalist ,his striving to stay alive and a very realistic account of the intrigue lading to the second world
Too many characters that have nothing to do with anything. The author over complicated the plot with unnecessary scenarios.
I love Guidall. He was outstanding in the Mitch Rapp series as well as the Saxon tales. In this book I think he was as board as I was.
