From the synopsis I wasn't sure I would like this book even though it was highly rated but since it was so high on te bestseller list I decided to give it a listen. If you enjoy mysteries, suspense, or drama, give it a try and you won't be disappointed. This was one of the best audiobooks I've come across this year. A classic tale of two social classes, with the assumptions that the upper class can do no wrong. All the weight of the law is behind the upper class while those in the lower class are left high and dry. In this case, however, the upperclass gents get a run for their money, a real challenge. The book has plenty of twists and turns and keeps the listener riveted. The only trouble is that I never wanted to put it down and get to sleep. Lost sleep .....
Waiting on the next Department Q installment. My Audible addiction is not waining...
What a remarkable book. If you like Dumas, you must like this modern renditition. I've listened to The Count of Monte Cristo numerous times, and look forward to doing the same with this one.
I just finished listening to the book. I must admit that when the book started it was slow, in the middle i felt that the author was jumping from one story to another but when i had completed 3/4ths of the book, i was convinced that this was one of the best legal thrillers that i've read... Legal thrillers being my favorite genre, i have read many. Well scripted and very engrossing. I should say that the reader has done an amazing job with the English accents of England and scotland as i'm sure that if i had read the book i wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as i have listening to this amazing book. If Legal thriller is your favorite cookie then you are sure to enjoy this one!!!
I have not heard the other similar title other listeners refer to.
However, This audio book is fast paced, detailed, full bodied, and well developed. I enjoyed it from begining to end.
It addresses legal, moral, financial, romantic and revenge aspects of the main characters.
I was never bored or wanting for a faster pace.
I am a truck driver and have listened to over 150 audible titles since 2002. This is one of my utmost favorites.
Buy this book.
You will not be dissapointed!
Don't you just love a great story well told?
So wonderfully written and narrated that I listened to it twice. If you like some court room drama (about 1/5 of the book) you'll love it just for that. Don't let those who say it is similar to the Count of Monte Cristo deter it is similar only that it involves a wrongly jailed man who seeks revenge. How he goes about it is brilliant. I will be seeking more of this author's books. The author is very familiar with many of the books subjects as you will find in the brief interview at the end which add to its credibility. Archer notes that he literally reads it to himself aloud and gets real people from various regions to assure the accents are authentic. So this book is *perfect* for audio.
I highly recommend this book. The reader is perfect: great with various accents and nuance, and the book is outstanding. Other than having tons of plot twists, it plays deeply on one's sense of justice. The bad guys get it, unlike in the real world, and oh how satisfying it is. The description of the British legal and prison systems are fascinating too.
If you need gripping reading, while taking a trip or exercising, this is for you.
Mr. Archer has done a wonderful job and the reader has has done likewise.
Clever story starting with the two essentials from the "Count of Monte Cristo"- escape from prison and means to wealth and time to pursue revenge. Well read, would recommend.
It kept me listening from beginning to end...had me laughing out loud...and cheering for the hero..and upset at the villains ...and missing them all at the end.
This is definitely one of the best audiobooks that I listened to in the last five years of Audible membership. Not only was it a really good story, but the reader was superb. It is rare that these two elements come together so well. I think that his time in prison has made Archer a better author.
Flawlessly written and extraordinarily narrated. I am old enough to remember old radio programs which had everyone rivoted to the box for the next installment. This was the equivalent of the best of the radio serials. Your imagination takes over during the narration. This book is so good it is a crime.
