I have always been a Jeffrey Archer fan, but this book exceeded all my expectations. The plot was original and very exciting. I found myself walking around in headphones, wanting to know what happens next!
Jeffrey Archer stands out as one of the few non-formula bestseller authors. This book presents a captivating story which is right up there with Sons of Fortune and other top books by Lord Archer. The story is of course somewhat predictable for anyone who's read Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo or Jules Verne's Mathias Sandorf but entertaining nevertheless.
I have read the hard copy of most of Archer's books and have always been intrigued. This is my first Archer audiobook and have found the author even better in the spoken word. This is among his best!!! I kind of knew what the ending would be but could'nt wait to find out how Archer would get there. This one made me late for work a few days..,.sat in the car in the parking lot to get to the end of the chapter. Great book!!!
Not as well thought out as the Count of Monte Cristo. The characters are likable and the story entertaining. However it seems as though the author ran out of energy, effort or interest in tying together the logistics of a good revenge plan and the legal issues. Not close in quality to The Count.
Absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. The plot and characters were well suited for their parts keeping your intense interest.
This is a great story and well narrated. It keeps you gripping especially during the 2nd part....and i had to sit in my car and listen in at lunch time...and take the long route back home and to work every day.....Worth every minute!
First, I must admit I enjoyed listening to the book. I'm more apt to read non-fiction, and Ilisten to books like this as an escape, a respite, which it was. And at first, I gave it 5 stars. The narration was first rate, I cared for the characters, the plot was easy to follow, and there were several surprises. The author clearly went out of his way to create non-traditional approaches to situations (for instance, finding a new way for Danny to get out of prison early),
I've downgraded my rating now, though, because a nagging problem I had throughout the book -- are these twists actually reasonable? -- grew from a tenuous "well, maaaybeee" ... to something less accepting. The author simply worked too hard to plow new ground.
The book did entertain me and the reading was excellent -- two of the ways I judge an audio book. But I did not learn anything (which I hope to do even in fictional works) and the plot simply didn't hold together after I put the book down.
The bottom line -- the true test for me -- is whether I would recommend this book to friends, and the answer is "no". There is just too much else to be read....
I have never read a Jeffrey Archer novel before, but the reviews of this were so glowing that I could not resist. He weaves a careful tale, with interesting characters. The narrator is amazing. However, the story is just not believable, which is ultimately why I rated low.
What a bore. Unless you want to spend 10 chapters in a make believe English jail don't waste your time. I just feel that this would be a good short story. Revenge... who cares ... more importantly how to get revenge for this book.
