Whereas the first book in the series had boring gaps due to development of some unlikable boring characters - I think this book got carried away with mysticism. Now, I enjoy some mysticism blended into a good story, but not when it is 'in your face' like a blinking neon sign.
This is a masterwork of far future science fiction. Manages to tell intimate personal stories about characters without losing sight of the bigger world picture. Excellent voice performance.
Unsatisfying ending. So much left unexplained. And I feel like that's because it was just essentially unexplainable. Between the time traveling and cyber metaphysics....
Checking out Brandon Sanderson's work
The first book was a great story. This one takes a different slant and tells another interesting story. It is not as compelling as the first, but still holds together. The bad guy is surprising (figuring out who or what it is). The time tombs are still confusing to me - must just be a bit dense for this one.
Overall a pretty good audiobook.
I'm a web developer based out of Sacramento, I listen to books while I work, and love audible.
Not as good as book one, but it's hard to measure up to one the best books ever written, and this is still a good book.
I really liked Hyperion, but I didn't believe that the author could tie all the sub-stories together and bring it to a satisfying conclusion. He pulled it off in a way that was good enough for me. In the final analysis there may be some dropped threads or inconsistencies, but I'll never know. I was swept along at a fast enough pace to not really notice or care. This book did the impossible.
It kind of goes without saying, but listen to Hyperion first if you intend to consume this. They are both worth a credit.
This book is very different from the previous one. Better. As if the previous served to present the scenarios and this universe, while this appropriated and created an action narrative at this location.
A quick history, dynamic, in which the Sci-Fi elements are rubbed in our faces as a crucial part of the existence, and all the complications involved in technological advances , including moral dilemmas are presented in an original way by characters who appear to have reflected much about them .
Lots of action , good characters and great story development .
