I am a woman who loves to read and to listen to books. I want to be entertained and taken to another place when I listen..
This story will make you laugh out loud and cry too! It takes you to another time and makes you remember junior high the good and the bad...and I sure wish I had a teacher as wonderful as Mrs Baker!
I'm a high school librarian.
Yes, I would rather listen to this story, it it funny and that comes across better in the audio.
Holling being convinced that the teacher hated him--she actually might have, he was the only one in her classroom every afternoon.
First one for me.
The performance competes for first place for me with the actual novel. Joel Johnstone reads in completely believable voices, often dripping sarcasm. Love Danny's breaking voice! And the novel is a masterpiece. I loved it. It's touching and funny and serious and smart all at the same time.
It would be a spoiler, but it has to do with miracles and strawberries.
I think Holling is my favorite, though I loved Mrs. Baker, Holling's dad, and Danny too.
Highly recommended. For anyone over age 9. Truly a great book.
It wasn't predictable. The characters were so interesting & you felt like you knew them. This was a great book!
Hollingsworth, because you felt for him. We cheered when it went well for him & was sad when it didn't.
I had to read this book for school and I thought that I would hate it but it actually wasn't so bad. I like realistic fiction and I thought this was more of a s Science type book but it wasn't. It took place long ago but it was written in like this time! I think that you will enjoy this!!!!!!!
Not quite knowing what this was going to be about, I truly enjoyed it more than expected.. It was well written, sounds authentic, and reminded me of what I hoped for when I became a teacher.
I would recommend this to anyone, adult, teens or pre teen.
I enjoyed this thoroughly. It is a charming and engaging story that lightened my mood considerably after having just listened to something very dark and disturbing with a bad narrator. Holling Hoodhood's adventures in seventh grade are told with such matter-of-fact honesty and engaging wry humor that you don't realize you're reading a coming-of-age story until you've finished it. Joel Johnstone did an excellent job and I'd happily listen to him read almost anything.
