First, the sound effects are cheap and horrid, so much so that it detracts from the overall story. Second, the voices of familiar characters are equally as horrible. My 5 year old grandson does a better Yoda voice. It was so bad I wasn't even sure if it was Yoda... With those two major aspects falling well short of the bar, any bar, it was hard to even get into the listening mood and impossible to immerse myself into the story. That said, the story in itself wasn't that bad as long as you root for the dark side of the force. The Jedi are portrayed as arrogant and somewhat bumbling. At times obvious actions are ignored in an attempt to move the plot along. Obviously the author had a tough task of writing a good story that could only go so far due to Episode 1 having already happened. Due to these tough constraints I gave the story 4 stars instead of just 3. Unfortunately the story really does nothing to add to the lore of Darth Maul. It fell well short of solidifying his place in Sith history. Alas the greatest examples of his animalistic tenaciousness are still the precious few moments of screen time he has in Episode 1.
I just wish that there was more actually about Darth Maul himself. It is creatively split up between multiple story lines that all come together nicely, but I would have liked more Maul.
This one could've been much better. Both story and narrator were lacking. If envisioned as live action or cartoon the whole thing could've been crammed into a 30 minute episode of something similar to Star Wars Rebels.
not as good as some of the other staff wars books. the performance was just so-so. sounds effects were kinda off. if you read books like pleagueis and the band trilogy then you will notice tons of inconstancies.
This was a thrill to listen too! great naration and an amazing story following one of my favorite characters from the star wars universe!
the only thing that I can say is wrong with this story is that when he does maul's voice, it sounds nothing like the movies. that breathy violent whispery voice was sorely missed. but still the story was perfectly wonderful. need a star wars kick to make you hate 1 2 and 3 less? this doesn't help. but its still awesome!
Gripping suspense and adventure that keeps you wanting to listen more! First time I hear it I went and bought an headset just so I could finish listening to it at nite! I recommend this for ALL Star Wars fans!
