he dropped th f bomb every third word. Could not get past the first chapter
From the first sentence it had me laughing and interested to see where it would take me.
It could have easily been cliched because of the mob aspect but the author pulled it off by laughing at character and his predicament.
Never heard of him before, but will be looking him up now.
No. Not extreme reaction, but laughed out loud several times.
Cool book, I was impressed.
A fantastically written story with the same stream-of-thought narrative you would expect from writers like Chuck Palahniuk. Down right disturbing, hysterical, and tragic all that the same time. The length is just right and the story is solid and very authentic feeling. I usually hate sound effects and music in audio books, this was done just right and really helped to bring the story to life. A great listen all the way through.
I couldn't believe that this medical resident was involved with thugs. . .and that he acted like a thug himself sometimes. It was a fun listen--didn't know what would happen next. The language is a little explicit, to say the least. Sort of a crazy book. I'm going to read the author's new book out next month.
I love stories that have little FYI moments as it is goes. Though this is fiction no doubt Josh Bazell's telling in the first person of an ER doctor/ ex-hit man view of what is going on in an emergency room was so believeable I will avoid hospitals at all costs for years to come. Some of the information I had to google it was so creepy. But I couldn't turn it off, the story was intense and amazing. The hitman was a bit too skilled to be believable but I didn't care the story was so good I suspended the need for him to be more realistic, oddly I didn't like the characters in this book none of them were really worth saving when it came to the end, with the exception of a homeless man with diabetes losing his feet (and it wasn't so much what the author did with this character as it was he didn't do, nothing disgusting like all the rest of the characters at some point and his little side story sort of drifted in the perriferal view of the main action, so nicely woven in I have to smile). This book has it all, the Italian/Russian mob, Jewish camps, white slavery, life in jail, courtroom deals, rescues, excellent!!! I highly recommend downloading this one. *it gets gross in the same imaginative ways too so be prepaid for that.
This story and performance is great - and he didn't rush to publish another one too soon. At last however, there is a new one out. If it isn't in audible I will be forced to buy it off the rack.
Yes! I work in a hospital so I found his thoughts related to medical system hilarious! The character's demeanor is jaded and cynical but it fits adding an interesting layer to the story.
Very interesting/refreshingly new plot. I wasn't sure how it was going to end!
The narrator did a great job with creating individual voices which adds to a great story. When you can listen to an audiobook and get drawn into the story and forget you ARE listening to an audiobook - that is a successful reader.
I found myself looking forward to listining in the morning as I got ready for work so I could find out how the character was going to get out of the next sticky situation.
The story was a dark comedy with a romantic side and a suspense/thriller side. It was a nice mix and a roller coaster ride for your emotions!
This one was a real surprise. I got it as it sounded like it might be good but I found it to be great!
Say something about yourself!
What made the experience of listening to Beat the Reaper enjoyable was the fact that the narrator gets you so deep onto the story that you want to finish listening to the book over and over. You cannot stop listening to the book at the story continues.
The most memorable moment is everything, from the very beginning you action and you see this all over the book. The most memorable part for me is the end!!!! I don't want to tell anything about it so the people actually listen to it and not read reviews.
Robert Petkoff is great, I really feel that this narrator has the perfect voice and intonation for the character. He really gives life to the character.
If you're starting in Audible and you like Mafia books, you should go for this one.
This was one of my first audio books that I listened to on the site and I was blown away by it. The narrator and the story was so good that I couldn't put it down, I was listening to it in the car, while washing the dishes, even before going to sleep. i like to compare this book to the movie Goodfellas in the way the main character describes situations and the connection to the mob and his ethic background being not Italian. Overall this is a great book and I recommend it to everyone!
This story has so many bits of medical trivia and anecdotes. I think the research that the author put into it made the story more interesting. The main character is one of those that you root for even when his illicit past is revealed. I think that this was at times an interesting story, but honestly it was one of those that i would not re-read. Small warning, the end is not for the squeamish.
