I did not read the print version of this book but I really did enjoy the narration and sound effects. Robert Petkoff did an amazing job of represnting all the characters. I really enjoyed his voice, street accent, and female voice overs.
I really enjoyed the shark tank scene. I've never been to an aquarium so this scene really came to life for me with the water and echo effects.
I have never listened to his performances before. I am looking forward to exploring other books he has narrated.
I think I was most moved when he went to Poland and found out about his grandparents true past. The story really changed at this point and you could see how in some weird way he was always meant to be "Bad" as I call it.
Great Great Listen! It was like watching Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos mixed with a little bit of General Hospital.
Absolutely, I did not want to stop listening to this book. It keeps you on your toes as Peter bounces from the past to the present and narrates the story of his life and the actions that have brought him to his current point. Bazell's words with Petkoff's narration is truly a winning combination.
I don't think it would be justifiable to say anyone other than Peter would be my favorite, he is not only the narrator but the central point in this entire story. He starts as just some MD on his way to work but from there the story rapidly changes and we are thrown into an alternate world and alternate life that come back to haunt Dr. Brown.
Petkoff has been able to bring to life the personalities of the characters and deals a fair hand when it comes to accents as well.
Laughing for sure and cringing at times, but mostly on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.
It's definitely worked it's way into my top 10, easily. Maybe even poking it's head into my top 5.
The fight scenes were very well described so that you can get a good idea of the combat that ensued, it really helped put you into the eye of the storm.
His voice was perfect for the dark gritty nature of the story and felt like a perfect fit for the main character Peter Brown
Some parts of it were very humorous in a dark way, some parts were very visceral and made me cringe (some graphic surgery scenes).
Great listen, fantastic story and literally the perfect narrator to go along with it, highly suggest it to anyone who enjoys The Wire or anything mafia.
I probably would not recommend this book just because it makes you feel so dirty and sick after listening. If you are into crime and gore, or really need a book to keep you awake on a long drive, this one will keep you on your toes.
Very dark, graphic and sexual. I wish I had been warned. I would not have bought his book.
Allegretto, Suspenseful, Uncomplicated
I would recommend Beat the Reaper to friends due to the up-tempo nature of the read. Underlying mob theme with a fast paced plot, enjoyable to distract from the real world..
His sarcasm brings light to the character, gives him added depth that helps pull you into the story. Well read, easy to like detail from his intonation and performance.
No extreme reaction to the book, was just a nice distraction into another's somewhat crazy slightly out of touch lifestyle....
The perfect antithesis to "chic lit" - lots of gratuitous sexual references; lots of testosterone; no lengthy analysis of sparsely mentioned emotions. Heavy on the action scenes with little regard to plausibility... The shark was this long, I swear!
Maybe. I'd have to read the reviews and see if he remedied his writing style.
Petkoff's performance was fine. It did not detract from the story, but I occasionally found his character voices uninspired.
Avid reader. Native Baltimorean. Older male. College-educated.
Absolutely not. In fact I am sorry I wasted my money on
The ridiculous premise that a foul-mouthed, Mafia hit man could become a doctor and then survive numerous attempts on his life for one. But most disapointing is that the author is overly enamoured with the vilest profanity. The entire story is liberally befouled with the f-word and other references to the female genitalia. If this was a movie, and I hope it never gets to that stage, it would be triple-X rated. I cannot recommend this to anyone.
As along as it is not a Josh Bazell offering of smut.
None that I heard.
I found the writing and the story to be very entertaining. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys action and adventure tales.
A Jack Reicher novel.
