My 9 yo daughter listens to this over and over; more than any other audiobook. I had a drive with my 12 yo son so thought we'd give it a try and the time flew by. Fun story with vivid characters and a well-read audiobook. Highly recommended!
I listened to this with my two boys, ages 11 and 15, on a road trip. Perfect vacation listening. Formulaic but entertaining. Having young teens as protagonists (As with Hiassen's "Hoot" and "Scat," both of which we've also listened to on long road trips)is great for the young people in the car; Hiassen's wry humor comes through well and the stories are never maudlin or simple-minded. Plus the pro-environment theme rings a bell with the young folk.
I can't imagine that this was written by the same person who wrote Skinny Dip & Tourist Season unless he wrote it when he was 12 years old.
Not mind boggling, but a fun summer read...or just right for a long drive in heavy traffic. You just need books like this sometimes. :)
My son and I started listening to this book as we drove in the car. We loved it so much. He couldn't wait to get into the car - he even stopped playing on his iTouch. We'll be listening to many more books together!
I've read/listened to several books by Carl Hiaasen and have enjoyed them greatly. This one? I couldn't get past the first five minutes. The narrator just turned me off completely. He sounded like somebody reading a cereal box to themselves. No enthusiasm, no energy, just a casual bored tone of voice like he had something better to do.
By all means, read Hiaasen's work, but make sure you can handle this narrator before purchasing. I wish I had....
I have read many of Carl Hiaasen's books.
I think the best is "Skinny Dip". But, each book was interesting. This book is, at best, FAIR. It just isn't anywhere as interesting or as well written as his previous books. I was so looking forward to his latest book! And I was disappointed.
I will read/listen to anything by Carl Hiaasen..Flush was good but I was unimpressed by the reader. I felt his reading distracted me from enjoying the book.
Highly recommend seeing Carl Hiassen in person..sharp, witty, and wise!
Just with this book, Carl Hiaasen flushes my imagination away by his extraordinary plots and characters.
