I'm all for experimental structure and new methods of story telling, but this is like listening to nails on a chalkboard. Admittedly, i only got 1/2 way through before putting it down, but i think his unconventional narrative was wreaking havoc on the language portals of my brain. so, i put it down for medical reasons.
i LOVE every other chuck palahniuk book i have read.
I HATE HATE HATE this one. well actually, i didnt even finish it. i was very disappointed that there was no indication of the overly detailed rape description. i deleted it from my player and my library.
I read and enjoyed Fight Club and saw the movie. This is another experience entirely. Palunik attempted to create an interesting style through the voice of "Pygmy" - a wierd mix of naive/unfamiliar with technical culture and very precise almost ultra scientific terminology. It didn't work for me at all.
Generally the characters were unabashedly brutal and disgusting - I have no problem with violence and sex, but a brutal anal rape in the first 30 minutes of listening was just completely gratuitous and purposeless.
The author likes to take cheap shots at America - again I have no problems with taking shots at America, but having your characters bundle up all the ugliness of America and then pretending you have something interesting to say is poor reading.
I didn't listen past the anal rape and don't want to bother listening any more.
This book is not a strong showing for Chuck, I loved Rant and have bought snuff and this one as fast as I could and neither one made me happy the same way Rant did, But this book fails because its just a bunch of broken english, I mean if this guy was really a trained agent I doubt he would anally rape another boy in a kmart, (second Chapter) or act the way he does, I mean how can a trained agent not even speak the dam language. I get it it is supposed to be interesting and a lot of people say its supposed to be a challenge, but no offense to Chuck no one is going to be talking about Pygmy in the same way as some one say reading Dante's Inferno in latin, now thats a challenge. Least favorite book in a long time.
