I read the reviews prior to downloading this book so I wasn't really expecting much. But, I really liked it. It had the twists and turns of a good suspense novel. There are some questions that I believe were left unanswered but I believe it's more from the fact that I over analyze things. Overall, I enjoyed this audiobook.
I agree with the reviewer who felt there were too many twists and turns. Particularly in the beginning. I came not to accept the "obvious" being presented, therefore, the story became predictable which puts one only a stone throw from boring. Then Deaver hit me with things I had not expected and I realized he'd set me up. If you really payed attention throughout, the surprise ending should not be a surprise.
I almost gave this 4 stars, because I did enjoy the story and the characters were, for the most part, well-developed. I did feel that Deaver wasn't happy with simply writing a tense thriller about women fleeing from remorseless killers. Instead, he had to add one twist and then another, until I was sure the heroine would turn out to be a man!
Additionally, a disappointing aspect of this audio book for me was the nasal quality of the narrator's voice. I found it really distracting, particularly when he switched from a male to a female character. It made me feel I would have enjoyed reading this book more than listening to it.
With those caveats, a good page-turner. I certainly won't open a door to a stranger if I'm in an isolated cabin in the woods!
I always know if I've found a compelling listen if I start to lose sleep because I don't want to turn my iPod off. This is a superbly crafted story with enough turns and twists and surprises to hold the listener's attention. the characterisation is strong and the pursuit section gripping. If you like Jeffrey Deaver you will certainly like this book.
If you want to read a really stupid account of being chased through the woods for 10 hours of listening. This book will satisfy you, but I really found my mind wandering off... boring.
A 5-Star Author, Jeffery Deaver, keeps you in suspense as he writes a cat an mouse mystery guaranteed to entertain you along with a master reader, Holter Graham. Loved it
OH HOW I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE THIS INTO A MOVIE!! My first Deaver novel and now I can't stop listening to them. I've listened to this twice! I love the suspense of this book! Very, very good and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
This is my 10th year with Audible! Seems like just yesterday I started listening to books! I wouldn't "read" any other way!
Deaver has provided another fantastic listen as he draws the listen into the macabre story of treachery and deceit...with a few dysfunctionalities of family's issues thrown in for good measure...some things jsut aren't what they seem...and the question of "whodunnit" looks like many characters could be the real culprit... Great listen and is even better when you have the time to listen in large chunks of time...smaller chunks of time will make you want to go back to review before you move forward.
