If you dive, listen to this book. If you have any interest in submarines and shipwrecks, listen to this book. Excellent narration and an excellent book. Just the right amount of history to keep the story going without feeling like your in class.
I love audio books and have been listening to them for over 20 years. This was an average quality book and narration. The writing was factual, but a bit choppy. The narration was dry. I am not saying that this book is bad. I learned quite a bit about deep water diving and the risks involved, but was never really drawn into the story.
I listened to this for my book club. We were all astonished at how spellbinding this adventure was! Never a dull moment, plus we all learned so much about deep sea diving and the true grit one must possess to do this. The story is also an education on U-Boats and how they were used during WWII. I listened to it in my car while I was driving, which I don't recommend because the story is so gripping at times that it totally captures all your attention!
Very well read and produced. An amazing treasure hunt with it's share of great characters, tragedy and heroics. Great listen and highly recommended.
I really enjoyed this book and even did some extra study on U boats afterward. The reader isn't great and there are a few parts that drag. But, overall, it is a good book, informative and intriguing.
You don't have to know anything about diving to enjoy this non-stop adventure. Early in the book the author pauses to descibe a typical deep-sea, shipwreck dive and the incumbent dangers. This helps make the diving sequences more meaningful to the non-diver.
I like particularly how the persistent divers conduct research in many places to uncover the identity of the U-Boat they have discovered, all the while proving the history accounts to be in error. It is a fine lesson in the value of going back to original documents and not relying on building upon others' (sometimes fallible) conclusions. This is a lesson many history "experts" would do well to learn.
This book was great. Definitely get the unabridged version of this title.
The only part of this book I did not enjoy at all was the narration. He has got to be one of the most dull, monotone narrators ever!
