Although intelligent and well-written, the plot unfolds far too slowly. There are entire chapters of chit-chat where nothing of consequence happens.
I also found the obviously fake British accent of the narrator extremely distracting and irritating.
I've listened to 4 chapters and I just can't tolerate the narrators bad accent. Maybe if the story was good..... but it's not good enough. I wish I had my money (& time) back.
I loved this book, It was filled with suspense and excitment. Although I was able to puzzle out much of the mystery this did not matter because the characters were so captivating that I still enjoyed the story tremendously. The narrator was absolutely fabulous. If you enjoy mysteries and romance you will be captivated.
I have listened to this book at least ten times. I love the way it is read to where you can't til it is read by one person. and I will be looking for more books by Deanna Raybourn being read by Ellan Archer
OK, I'm a man; I expect the plot to progress, and information shared. This book spends a lot of time setting the mood, much details, and did not "get on with it". This is not a good book for most men. We expect more bang for the buck. The reader was excellent throughout.
I loved this book. It was a great story with some very interesting people. I changed my mind about who was "it" so many times... it keep my interest and then some!
This story kept my full attention - I had trouble getting out of my car at times! Intrigue on many levels - I look forward to the next book by this talented author.
Just read the previous reviews before you buy. Most people love it, some people hate it. Ditto for the narrator. Not at all my idea of a romance, which is fine, but I agree with someone else about the creepy male lead. Plot moves slowly and I found myself skipping around to see if I wanted to finish it. Julia is a strong personality and interesting in many ways but I never warmed to her enough to care what happens to her. So it comes down to unraveling the mystery. The ending just depressed me and I was glad to be done with it.
I was disappointed with this book as it was listed under romatic historical. and it is sort of, its a real good who done it, well written, but I hate it when you get to the end of the book you are not at the end of the story. If these lovers get together you will need to find and buy the sequel because although it is clear they will meet again they have barely gotten to know each other in this book if these two will become a couple ever and that is usually what I am waiting for in good romance you won't find out till the next adventure or possibly the one after that. depending on how long the author wants to string the romance along ( once it begins) . What if they never publish it. I will never know if boy gets girl well actually thats usally a given but at this point we see only the obstacles to such an outcome which the auther usually although not always overcomes in the novel. I shall read more carefully and see if there is any hint of this croping up in books I order in the future.
I really did not like this book. The story moved very slowly and the leading man in the book was a creepy jerk. I do not recommend this book to anybody unless you like stories about homosexuality and creepy leading men.
