This author can create atmosphere and characters with the likes of Dickens, Eliot, Hardy, Bronte, Galsworthy and the best of the 19th century English writers. She recreates the wonderful atmosphere of Silas Marner, Return of the Native, the Forsyte Saga and other great English novels but does it with a foot in the 21st century.
Good Heavens! I thought this story would never get started. Then, when it did, I thought it would never end! While the premise promised to be interesting, it turned out painful to listen to! When I finished I thought I would slit my wrists for having wasted a credit on such an abysmal story. I don't know, maybe the book is better.
This book does just what the my review title says! Any true book lover will be drawn from the opening pages. The two narrators do a fabulous job. This book still swirls through my memory months after listening to it. I recommend it highly!
I'm so frenetic in my thought patterns -- way too busy, but this one held my focus every time I got in the car. I couldn't have zoned out on this story if I had tried.
Captivating characters and intriguing plot are further enhanced by two talented audio readers, Bianca Amato and Jill Tanner. Definitely worth a second an third listen.
Based on other reviews I thought this might be an interesting book to listen to. It wasn't! It was an absolutely FASCINATING book to listen to. I was so wrapped up in the excellent narration of a finely crafted story....in fact, sometimes I rewound it just so I could hear the wonderful way the author strung ordinary words together. But aside from that, it was an indredibly complex story that moved from one suspenseful moment to another. I thought I had figured out the 'secret' but was dumbfounded by the reveal....and yet, all the clues were there. I plan to read the book itself now (or listen to it again) to see where all the clues are and how they link up. This is definitely on my short list of favorite books....right up there with Wilkie Collins and Daphne DeMaurier.
I liked the book more, the more I got into it. It is primarily a book for women, particularly for women who enjoy "classic" literature. I am a man, but did enjoy the story - especially the second half.
A wonderful story! But the two narrators made it so lovely to listen to. I've searched out other audiobooks and bought them just because they were read by one of these ladies.
I can't wait for more from Setterfield. The narrators are incredible. All around one of the most intriguing novels of the last year. Definitely a must have for anyone who loves fiction or mystery novels.
