There are definitely many moments that are hard to swallow; but for those who choose to know and feel what this boy went through, this story is captivating. With credit to the narrator, The story is delivered with a strong balance of boyish perspective and the harsh reality of what he went through.
I felt a few questions were left unanswered, but then again that can be seen as part of the story. Also appreciated was the epilogue, associated perspectives, and resources.
The story told in the book is unfortunately told very well. It is very hard but at the same time easy to believe that there really are people out there that do this kind of thing. And to think of how many children go through things like this is disgusting. I'd recommend the book on audio instead of paper for this reason. On audio you can get a little distracted with seeing something or easily being interrupted and distracted. Reading the book would have you a lot more focused and involved which in my opinion would cause you to feel more of the emotions which are very deep. The book would cause a lot more tears and feel a lot more of the pain and suffering that the child went through. I don't think you could be any more angered either way you whether you read or listen to it. You'll still end up being pissed off at some point!
My husband and I are foster parents. This book reaffirms our dedication to caring for abused and neglected children. We were in tears as we listened to this account. I'm so glad he had a happy ending.
This is such an eye-opening book to Child Abuse! It is not for the faint of heart, or should I say ears. However, the realness, raw and bluntess are what truly make this book a successful one. I read it once in middle school and then recently as an adult. Still hits the heart every time ....
This was one of the saddest books I have listened to ever. I cannot imagine a mother treating her son like this, but even more sadly a father turning a blind eye.
This book made feel like I was living tthis boy life through his eyes. I felt the fear in my heart when he heard his mother, I felt the defiance of not giving up his last piece of dignity. I feel it is something I truly understand and not just something i know about that happens somewhere.
This book really connected me and my husband as he was abused by his mother for the later part of his life. I applaud and appreciate the realness and courage you show throughout this. Thank you for speaking.
It's amazing what the human spirit can endure. This story is just heart breaking to me I found myself so angry at David's mother more then on the verge of tears but cannot deny the fact that tears were shed while listening to this book. Truly an amazing story that will leave you in awe.
