Tangential, eclectic, avid listener... favorite book is the one currently in ear.
I work with folk who have come out of, or are in abusive situations... and this book provided insights that I couldn't have learned any other way. I would highly recommend to teachers, social workers, pyschology majors... anyone who has a role involving children. This is an adults remembrance of a childhood that goes from perfect to beyond abusive... all while the child continues to be surrounded by teachers, neighbors and family who fail to see and intervene.
The book is a stark and a difficult listen. The child is resiliant and it does get better... but I wouldn't consider it entertainment, rather education. That said, the world isn't pretty and by being unaware we are missing opportunities to intervene.
It's amazing what the human spirit can endure. This story is just heart breaking to me I found myself so angry at David's mother more then on the verge of tears but cannot deny the fact that tears were shed while listening to this book. Truly an amazing story that will leave you in awe.
After reading this book I felt that my view of the world has changed. If you love children and would do anything to help children then this book is a great read for you. It is saddening, but it shows how a children need our help. This books deeply shows how cruel the world can be. It reveals one little boys hope for survival, and how he dealt with child abuse. I loved this book because it changed my views of the world and makes me want to do more to help children. I would encourage anyone to read!! Loved it!!
I loved this book. It perfectly describes what it's like to be abused. I dislike the feeling I get when I listen to the punishments of the child, but I don't dislike anything about the narration or the story itself.
I read this book years ago and so I didn't even listen to the audio sample.. the moment I heard the narrator's voice I was instantly regretful. It absolutely took the power from the book and made it sound so weird and disingenuous. I'm new at audio books, so it was a hard lesson learned to listen to the sample first. I think I'll stick with author narration so that at least I know it will be authentic. I really feel like the narrator made it sound like a weird joke. love the book, wish there were other narrators to choose from.
