I highly recommend this book it was the best that I have read in a long time.I loved the main character and was hooked from the first page. This book made me laugh, cry and scared me out of my wits.
Was a bit disappointed with the end until I found out it had 2 more books to it.Can't wait to read the other books.Loved it!
I've read lots of negative reviews of the narrator and just wanted to go a little easy on him. It is quite difficult for male narrators with deep voices to do female voices; and he does end up sounding female, just not in an attractive way. He does the male voices wonderfully, though, and the dramatic effects for the scary parts made me jump out of my skin each time!!!
Having said that, I'm not crazy about the amount of fantasy in the story itself... I knew it was part 1 of a series (it says so in the title!) and now part of me is curious about what happens next but part of me really doesn't want to go through this experience again (maybe a non-audio book borrowed from the library rather than bought)
The romance part was OK though and the characters were interesting
The book was enjoyable, until toward the end, it went along, easy to keep up, interesting until about 5 minutes before the end, it was like she just decided there was too much left to say, she had too little time to say it and tada it was over. Of course I didn't know at the time it was a series, I am downloading the next book Pagan stone, and hopefully I will feel a little better about the beginning . . . and the ending.
This s the First of this authors books I have read, and really did enjoy it.
This may well have been a decent story but for the ridiculous narration. The narrator made the females sound stupid and vapid and the story sound lame and corny. He should stick to reading for mills & boon. He really spoiled the story.
If you can get past the narrator the book is pretty good. He reads the main story lines fine, but this guy should never ever ever try to do the voices of women.
I am a new member. I normally just read the book - this is my 3rd time "listening" to an audiobook. The reader was great! A little odd to hear a man attempting female voices - kinda like Travolta in the new version of "Hairspray" or Nathan Lane in "Birdcage" - but you get used to it and can easily identify the characters in the story with the changes in his voice. So well in fact, I could just as easily imagine reactions, scenery, character types, etc. Of course, Nora Roberts is an excellent story teller. I can not wait to "read" Book 2 and the coming third book in this series. Okay Audible.com...I'm hooked.
The story, in and of itself, was a good one. If you aren't into listening to sex scenes, however, you might want to get ready to toggle your MP3 player forward at times.
I suppose that my biggest problem with this book, and the reason I gave it 4 stars, is the narrator. He has a fine resonant voice, however when he attempted to voice the ladies, he sounded like Nathan Lane in "The Birdcage". Or, for those of you of the younger persuasion, he sounded very much like Chris Crocker of YouTube fame during his rant to "leave Britney alone!".
My husband and I did laugh at the voices, though. One character in particular sounded like Liberace. LOL!
If you're concerned, be sure to listen to the snippet provided.
I will try just about any book to see if I'll like it. I can get distracted easily but if it can keep my attention I will swear by it. I like Karen Marie Moning, Suzanne Collins, Charline Harris, Ray Bradberry, Sherrilyn Kenyon, also I love to learn history, religion, and would like to spread my horizons in other languages.
There are some parts that can get a little mushy, not being huge into the "old lady" romance. But overall a good read.
I have to admit, I have never really given too much thought to read any other Nora Roberts books. She always comes with a stigma as too mushy and tame for my liking.
He gives a good sense of the character's personality and how they come to life with his voice.
Nora Roberts comes with a stereotype that she is for little old ladies. But she breaks the molds in this book series. It gives a good science fiction twist to the mundane romance that can usually haunt the romance section. Though without giving too much of a unrealistic feel to it.
You feel for the characters, and want them to prosper. The "demon" in the book can almost seem slightly lame at some points. Almost like she purposely made him that way to keep it light hearted.
