I gave this 4 stars, but 3.5 would have been more accurate. Interesting plot, well paced, but the two main protagonists were difficult for me to embrace. The constant reminders of how these two tough guys are damaged & capable of extreme violence, while gentle and vulnerable to manipulative woman, just made them seem silly. So much pain, so much angst, so many regrets.....come on guys, buck up and solve the mystery.
Also they weren't necessarily clever, they just toughed it out. Perhaps these Robicheaux novels are better suited to men, who are more likely to relate to the whole complex, conflicted guy thing.
I would have prefered more plot and less introspection.
Daily commuter relying on Audible to keep awake. I need excitement! If something crazy doesn't happen in the first 20 mins I'm done!
Being from California, I love hearing the tales of Dave Robicheaux and New Orleans. What an interesting and historical place. James Lee Burke always tells an interesting story and I wish I had begun them in chronilogical order so I could keep up with all of his wives and Clete's activity. But, I have nearly listened to them all and am greatful he has kept the same narrator, who does a fantastic job. Love em!
I can't get enough of the Dave Robicheaux novels (unabridged)with Will Patton narrating. The characters were engaging, but I especially liked the plot of this one. Burke's prose, as always, is lyrical, full of Southern imagery. Very literary but never boring.
i will never listen to another book by JLB, as much as i have enjoyed them
great sense of feeling about characters and setting
the bs comments,(uncalled for) about Catrina, make me seeth, and i will never buy a book by this author again
Burke must be the best American author of our day! His novels continue to amaze me and keep me engrossed. I particularly enjoy the Dave Robicheaux novels but almost anything he pens is good to me.
James Lee Burke can't go wrong with his Dave Robicheaux series! Alwasys a great read. Once I get started on one of these books I can't stop listening...
Classic James Lee Burke! Will Patton is my new favorite narrator! He nails the voices that I think they would sound like especially Clete Purcell. If you like mystery and suspense you have to listen to this one!
The story is quite entertaining. But, the reader embarrased me to death. I've downloaded more than 150 audiobooks in the last few years and this is the only time I have been so disappointed in a narrator. 30 years as an petroleum landman, mostly in South Louisiana, means I have actually verbally dealt with a hundreds of people from the very towns of New Iberia, Lafayette, Thibeadeau, Morgan City, New Orleans, and they have a wonderful full bodied accent that sounds absoutely nothing like this lame excuse for a reader. If you can't do the accent, just please, speak plain english, use Scott Brick, or find new voices. Don't ruin another good book with a bad narrator.
I enjoy detective books, but I could not get into this one. I listened to the 1st half and fast forwarded through almost all the 2nd half. As a woman reader I thought the language to be rather crude in parts. I felt like I wasted my credit on this one
