His Dark Materials is a really great series. It draws you in and keeps you on your toes. I really enjoy the innocence of it paired with the thorn of deceit. It is a must have. I've listened to it time after time and it still has it's good time luster.
I have read/listened to a lot of books, and this series has to be my favorite. The full cast narration does the text justice. This first part of the trilogy is my least favorite, but I still enjoyed it immensely. Along the journey, Pullman shows us so many aspects of our own world from the capriciousness of youth, to the sorrow of innocence lost; from the trappings of tradition to the wonders of nature and science; from the power of friendship to the beauty of sacrifice.
The world he creates is stunningly complex and the story he spins is nothing less than captivating. Do yourself a favor and give the series a try.
No Harry Potter available to download but that turned out just fine. I had seen this movie and thought like most books vs. movies the book would be better. My assumption was correct. It kept my attention and was an easy, enjoyable listen. I'll keep going in the series and see......
I thoroughly enjoyed The Golden Compass. I haven't seen the movie and wanted to read the book before I did, as movies rarely do books justice. I enjoyed this audiobook so much that I am listening for the second time.. The story is full of rich characters and is brilliantly narrated, in my opinion. I don't care that it is a children's book, I may not even wait for credits to read the two that follow. The cast brought the story alive and created vivid pictures in my mind as each scene and character was described.
I am so looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.
I thought the production was first rate. I thought the cast of characters were very good. The story was fast paced and interesting. I can see where the (supposed) anti-christian leaning my be construde but the same was said of Harry Potter. It may be abit in the young adult range rather than children reading however the cast performance will keep a childs attention.
I love books read by the author, when they have a nice voice. I loved listening to Pullman. He has a beautiful voice that is perfect for telling this story. There is a cast of actors for all of the character voices. Lyra's was a tad annoying, but most were very well done and the story became seamless despite so many different actors.
This story was full of action and adventure and plenty of questions to get your brain working. It has many levels, so it will appeal to young adults and more mature audiences differently, however it will likely appeal to all.
As for the story, the author is very frank in his criticism of the church, and embracing of terms that the church fears (witches, daemons). That will immediately put off some people. The readers his slant are going to put off have probably already written off the series due to the propaganda :) However he tries to show the "humanity" in every character, most of them having suprising depths. Church authorities are more likely to be "bad" than a witch or daemon, however you will often be surprised whenever you think you "know" a character.
My disappointment came in that this book is a cliffhanger, as part of the trilogy, and the last two books do not live up to the first. So it is hard to read the first and not find out how the story ends, but it is not as satisfying a journey after the end of this one. By the very end the tone has changed from action/adventure to philosophy. This bored my sons and even myself to some extent. That affected my rating of this book slightly, its dependence on the other two. Alone it was engagine, exciting, though-provoking, and a pleasure to listen to! And I did have a hard time putting down the other 2, I was so hooked into the story, though they would get more like a 3 star.
The book has been around a while so I won't comment on the story except to say that it's entertaining, interesting, and original.
The narration of the book, complete with multiple narrators and great production values made this book a real joy to listen to. If you like Pullman, or want a book that mixes fantasy, alternative history, and social commentary, this is worth the time.
Good novel, a three parter though, they stick it to you in part three making it take 2 credits to download. This book is great, it has a few long drawn out parts that are boring to the reader but it is made up for I think. Good for all ages. The narrator is great, read it but be aware that this series is about killing God.
