I was excited to listen to the audiobook and watch the movie after seeing movie trailers for THE GOLDEN COMPASS all month. Regarding the audiobook, for production rating, I give it a 5+ stars. The production, use of several really good actors, sound effects, etc. is excellent. I wish more audiobooks were this good. The reason I give this audiobook two stars, is for the story line. The storyline is uninspiring. It sounds like so many others in this genre. Nothing new. The movie, while beautiful and decent acting, also left me disappointed.
For me "The Golden Compass" it was a great piece of fantasy. I really enjoyed the fact that actors read the story. The different character voices were all superbly acted. I so was engaged through out the whole story.
This may be simple but if I do not want a story to end it is a good one for me and I did not want it to end. I and look forward to the rest of series.
My wife and I have been listening to Audible books for many years. I have read "The Golden Compass" in book form; I loved the entire trilogy and knew my wife would enjoy this book. We started to listen to it on our Thanksgiving trip, but after about 30 minutes, we had to turn it off. The quality was terrible; the editing of different voices for each of the many characters made the plot difficult to follow; and the main reader read far to rapidly.
A great book spoiled by a terrible production.
I liked the book. It was a great adventure. I am a Christian, but I don't believe that hiding from the fact that not everyone is a Christian helps anyone. We have to be aware that there are athiests out there and some of them, as is the case with this author, are talented. Instead of running and hiding we should be writting stories of our own. perretti and dekker on hot on their tales. When their movies hit the big screen I hope we still have freedom of speech in this country so we can portray our side of the story. A lot of men died for our right to free speech. All preaching aside this is a fun tale that I fully intend to take my 11 year old to see. I will explain to her, or better yet read to her, how Genesis actually goes. Then we will get popcorn and enjoy the show.
Although the sound quality is a little poor, perhaps given the advances in newer books on tape, the acting, story and pace was amazing. I highly recomment this one!
I purchased this book for my son. He's 7, and not ready for the book, but I was. Very enjoyable fantasy. I especially enjoyed the cast of characters/readers.
Immigration lawyer in Kansas City. I like Character driven dramas, fantasy (monsters, magic and witches oh my!) and coming of age stories. Favs include: The Book Thief, The Game of Throne series, Harry Potter Series, Dresden Files, Nightside series, anything by Neil Gaimen, 100 Years of Solitude.
I don't know what I was expecting, but I was a little disappointed with this book. In particular the girl that did the voice of the main character I thought whined alot. It wasn't bad, just not great. I guess I am having Harry Potter withdrawl and am trying to find a charming youg adult series that appeals to adults too, to take its place. That's expecting alot I know.
The full cast makes this story absolutely riveting! I was captivated by the characters, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am very impressed. THe story seems like it might be too sophisticated for really young readers, but it was great for young adults and those of us young at heart!
This book was such fun to read. The plot moved quickly and was full of action and adventure. I'm on to books 2 and 3.
