I discovered Bryce Courtnay through Audible and have now listed both to The Persimmon Tree and Brother Fish. Both are excellent stories with memorable characters. In Brother Fish I learned more about the Korean War than I had known previously.
This was an amazing book. Bryce Courtenay has done it again. I couldn't put this book down I didn't want it to end. There was great attention to detail and the story left no loose ends, which is what I like.
!st Was the reader. Best I have ever heard. Great diction and makes you feel like you right there with him in the story. Also very good story line. Great character developement. Makes the characters come to life. Could not stop listing to the story.
This reader - linked with this auithor - is a winning combination. Keep up the good work. I never heard of this author or reader unitl Brother Fish. I am on part 3 of 4 parts - and have already purchase all of the rest of his books by this author and reader. Perfect match. I guarantee you will not be diaapointed !
I'm pretty stingy with my 5 stars, but this book earned every one of them. This is my second book by this author, and I'll be looking for more. And as for the reader, Humphrey Bower is my new hero. I cannot believe that he was reading both Jacko and Jimmy. Talk about range! Oh, and don't forget the proper English of the Countess. Pairing this reader with this author was an inspired choice. This, and "The Power of One" which was my other read from this author, is my idea of really good storytelling.
It sometimes touched my heart, sometimes repulsed me, sometimes annoyed me and other times made me laugh.
Nearly all the experiences felt real and believable.
Lovely range of accents, pitch and tones.
Love Sci Fi and Fantasy books since I was 8, starting reading A Princess of Mars series in Junior High School thanks to my Uncle Lester.
I selected this book to listen to with my husband who loves history. Imagine my surprise when I found how much I enjoyed the book; the history of the Korean war, Australia, and China were riveting and the characters and story are brilliant! I most certainly will read another book by this author.
Took awhile to get into this book- lot of info about the Korean war. Quite interesting but alot of war info on individual battles. Once the plot moved past that point, the story got more and more interesting.
As usual, the narrator, Humphrey Bower, was fantastic. His voice just transports you into the story and keeps you there engrossed.
I was glad I purchased this book. Worth listening to.
This book is an excellent character study that spans many countries and an extended time period. Great!
I absolutely LOVED this book and hated for it to end. Courtenay's characters are so well developed and engaging, and the storyline is terrific. Humphrey Bower is a joy to listen to, and in addition to his delightful Australian accent, the man is a brilliant mimic, nailing every accent across a wide range of nationalities. All around a wonderful listening experience by one of the best combos out there!
