Twisted, Engaging, Enthralling
When the story comes together, culminating in a complete reversal of everything you had taken to be fact--it will make you rethink the entire story as you search for the clues you're certain to miss.
Wonderful narration. The voices of each character were distinct and unique. Her seamless transition between the narrator and other characters made this an exciting listen.
Give me serenity... *flash*
Superb storytelling with just enough twists to keep you guessing until the end. The description and detail put into this story are rarely seen these days--Chuck truly immerses reads in his world. By the end of the book, you'll feel like you're standing next to the characters.
This is not a book for the faint of heart, the easily offended or the bashful. It's raw, controversial in ways and exposes readers to a mixture of social distortion. That being said, it's wonderfully twisted.
Sometimes, I believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
I don't even know how to start this. This was my first introduction to Chuck Palahniuk. He is like no author I have read before, and I appreciate his creativity. Some parts of the novel, I believe, jumped around a bit to much. Even though the story line was a bit to "coincidental" and extremely "out there", part of you actually believes in the reality of it all. Because of this book, I will definitely be buying more by Chuck.
The opening scene alone had me knowing I'd cherish this read from start to finish. A completely unlikable heroine - a shallow model disfigured permanently and going through life with a veil unable to speak. Chuck isn't about the situational realism so much as the biting and brilliant inner monologue and this work has its share of gems. I will listen over and over.
The narrator did an incredible job of creating tone and mood through her use of varied voices.
I like that the story challenged my normal framework for reality. Not many books have challenged my patterns of thought in such a demanding way.
The scene where the main character first leaves the hospital and goes into the grocery store; the theft of the turkey and the comments of the child in line are telling.
The main character.
yes the reader was wonderful
yes, the story was written different then other stories im use to reading
the voice where great and the sounds were more real then what i would have been able to think up.
Fabulous!!! I loved this audiobook. Palahniuk's voice is smart and witty with just enough edge to make the main character and story compelling. The reader was perfect for this material. Needless to say, I highly recommend this book, but Palahniuk's voice isn't for everyone. If you like wholesome, positive stories with good-hearted characters, this is probably not the book for you.
I can't decide if this author is a genius or a hack. Once I started listening to this book, I just couldn't stop, but his style is unconventional and demands that you pay close attention. I don't believe I could have read this book, but listening to it was quite enjoyable for the most part. It was very engaging and entertaining, but at the same time was twisted and strange in a way that did make me wonder what I was doing listening to it. Some of the plot was just *out there* and I couldn't really relate, but I also couldn't stop listening. I wouldn't say I'm easily offended, but there were a few scenes and details (sexual in nature) that were just over-the-top and made me very uncomfortable. So, this was my first and last Chuck Palahniuk book, as I understand that this one was tame compared to his others.
I do want to say that the reader, Anna Fields, was awesome and had a great deal to do with the fact that I chose to stick with this book until the end. Her inflection and tone were just perfect in doing all the voices, and it sounded as if she were really experiencing the book herself, not just reading words on a page. I am on the lookout for more of her work here at Audible.
This book is painful and I can not finish it. The narrators mumbling is very disturbing as she imitates the main character who can not talk.
I cannot finish it. The rantings of an 14year old immature brat running with a scamming drug crowd was not what I expected. Boring and painful to listen to.
The story drones on and on with the narrators very annoying voice. There is no substance to the story and the characters have no depth making it a total waste of listening time.
