Shallow girls with an IQ of a banana
Very simple writing. Plot was incredibly predictable. I'm so shocked this book is being made into a movie.
The story was redeemable if the writing was so horrible.
For literally YEARS, Audible has been listing this book in my recommendations. Every time I saw it, I would scoff and scroll past it. Then a few weeks ago came the fateful day...the day that I was out of credits, out of books to listen to, and broke! I was looking for a cheap, fun read to hold me until my new credits posted, and lo and behold, there was Vampire Academy...again. I think it may have been even cheaper than usual, so I bought it with no expectations. For the first hour or so, I was not impressed. The beginning of the story borders on silliness, but I kept listening because the story was so original and unusual (and again, I was broke and out of credits). After a while, I found myself actually wanting to know what happened next, I found myself smiling as I listened, and a few times I totally burst out laughing.
I don't want to give away any of the story, because I think part of the reason I liked this book so much because I knew NOTHING about it and none of my friends had read it, so I had no spoilers. It's definitely not high art or great literature. It's simply a light, fun, well-written, story that provides some escapist entertainment.
I enjoyed it so much, that I used my next two credits to buy books 2 & 3, then I bought three extra credits so I could get 4, 5 & 6 at a discount! If you like the YA/Fantasy genre, and are an older teen adult, this book is definitely worth a listen. I do not recommend it for teens under 16 because I'm a mom and a prude, and there are some mild sexual situations and plenty of underage drinking. Not to mention the occasional f-bomb. But, c'mon...it's soooo cheap. What do you have to lose?
And if you DO like the book, whatever you do, do NOT see the movie. That's two hours of my life I'll never get back. Instead, buy the next book!
No way. Why did I do this to myself? maybe this story is too young for my age... I don't know but Rose annoyed the absolute hell out off me as a character and the writing style was hard to connect with.
Possibly, I'll try something else in this genre and get back to you.
I find it hard to like female narrations, I don't know why. Unfortunately she had to fill big shoes and this story didn't help.
Cry about the loss of 8hrs I will never get back.
Maybe if the characters were better. I hate characters that thinks it alright to dominate other peoples lives but think they can do what they want. I hate Authors who make meek characters for others to dominate, making them look weak, Especially as a main character. There are exceptions to this. But this story was not it. It made me hate Rose as a character.
Love this site! I have a very busy job, so listening to audio books enables me to keep up on great stories!
A different narrator. Her voices are terrible. It's almost like she's mocking the characters.
Terrible voices. Her main man is Russian and talks a lot. Don't you think you would want to perfect the accent? It was painful. The supporting characters have a dopey tone. Why didn't someone fix this in the studio?
Will be requesting a refund. What a waste, the story was good.
Yes, I really enjoyed this first VA novel
I love Rose and Lissa
I thought she did Dimitri a little too Russian, but i liked it and it was better than not at all which was what the narrator in book 2 did
Author really made me feel everything the characters were feeling. I wanted to read the series before the movies came out because I'm sure, as always, the books will be better and I'm pretty sure I'll be spot on.
The author did a wonderful job making you feel the bond between Vasalissa and Rose.
The Narrator tried to differentiate characters with different voices but some of her choices almost made me shut off the book within the first 10 minutes. There were many instances that the narrator forgot to use the voice she had chosen for a character and used her regular voice
Just looking for an enjoyable story! Books are my passion.
I've been curious about this series, but was never sure if I should read it. Most reviewers have said this book is necessary to set up the characters and the story. With that being said, I enjoyed the book, and I have purchased the 2nd book, Frostbite.
My biggest complaint was with the narrator. The character Ralph sounded like he had a cold, and Lissa sounds like a 6 year old. If someone can't change their voice, they shouldn't try.
The story line is good, but it's hard to get into this specific series because of the narrator. I definitely didn't care for her. It may be best to pick this book up and read it.
It's hard to get into any of the other characters because they sound really whiney and Dimitri's accent is crazy, not in a good way lol, so I have to say Rose Hathaway is my fav. She sounds like she can be whiney too, but I think that she's a strong girl with a strong will and feisty. It's different from other main characters I've read about.
Unfortunately not, she sounds like she's doing the voices for a Scooby Doo cartoon.
I'm still trying to give this series a chance so I wouldn't completely knock it but I don't know if I'd use a credit it again if given a second chance.
Yes, I LOVE the VA series! I read them (physically, with my own eyes) a few years back and the series has remained at the top of my YA SciFi/Fantasy list ever since. With the movie finally due out early next year, I thought it would be fun to relive the series through audible now.
Rose, the main character. She's got major Sass, but she's still strong and deeply dedicated.
GET A DIFFERENT NARRATOR!!!!!
I don't know anything about Stephanie Wolf, but from listening to her voice I can tell you she sounds like just the cutest, Little Old Lady. She might be perfect for narrating Mother Goose, but to play a 17-YEAR-OLD Rose Hathaway....COME ON!!!!! This is the worst casting I have ever heard in the history of audio books....you have completely missed the mark here! She makes Rose sound like Grandma, Lissa sound like a Cupie Doll and Dimirti a total Dweeb, giving him a very heavy accent (which directly goes against the character description) and stripping him of any hint of sex appeal. In general her voice is saccharine sweet throughout the book, which is not just annoying but also wrongfully gives the author's often funny, sarcastic and suggestive writing style, a super creepy, voyeuristic feel.
Normally, I would refrain from commenting on the narrator; as I don't feel they ultimately have much bearing on the validity of a book itself. But in this instance, I felt a little robbed buying this! So I wanted to get the warning out there. Luckily, it looks like the narrator changes moving onto the next books in the series. Obviously, I must not have been the only one to notice the issues with the original.
The book is worth it if you can get past this narrator!
