I'm a fan of Peter's from his TV show - my mother and I watched it for years. I'm just now addressing the clutter in my home, both mine and my mother's, who died last year. Listening to his explanations of how to evaluate an item, especially about how getting rid of an item someone you loved owned isn't tantamount to dishonoring their memory, freed me to finally donate and throw away ridiculous amounts of stuff I've been holding onto for years. If you can pay attention to his directions and honestly work through your house room by room, you will have a comfortable, clutter-free home that you're proud to show off. Highly recommended.
Although the book is entertaining and I agree with most of what the author says, he could be a little more understanding and respectful when talking about people's messes and stashes. We ARE those people he talks about, and it's a little off putting when you're listening to an audiobook trying to improve yourself, and the author is like, "can you believe that? Who would do something like that?"
I have to admit it. I was convinced that Peter Walsh was talking about me in this book. I could identify so well with so many aspects of it that I was truly horrified. Time after time, I heard him describe me and my method of acquiring stuff, storing stuff, needing stuff, and hiding a whole lot of it from others! I've listened to this book several times and I never fail to come away with another tidbit to assist me with my "problems". I've begun with small steps and while it would be nice to have him visit my home, I think I can probably manage to get it all under control with only his voice prodding me along. If you are considering this book at all, then you are definitely described in it at some point, so go ahead and buy it. We all know who we are. We might not want to know it. We certainly wouldn't want to admit it because then we'd have to deal with it. Walsh is 100% on target and even if I am horrified at the prospect of digging out of my "clutter cage", he's given me the "tools" to set myself free.

I've been always wanted to find this book, then when I saw it displayed on Audible, I just grabbed it without thinking.This book as I already expected, and so glad that I spent my credit on it.
I would not include the "Maintenance" section (second half of the book).
In the first half of the book the author proposes a simple approach to dealing with our accumulated stuff. The second half, however, is tedious with the author assuming a preachy tone,
The book contains a great deal of good advice on how to dig out from a mountain of stuff as well as how to avoid finding oneself back under the mountain in the future. At times I thought he was a bit of a scold, but I have to admit I got a lot out of it. He reinforces his ideas with some easy to remember phrases and this has proven to be far more valuable than I thought at the time I listened to it. I now say to myself when tempted in stores: "For something to be added, something else has to be gotten rid of. What shall it be?" and this has helped me save money and stay a bit neater. It was what I needed and I recommend it to anyone else who has a problem with stuff piling up. One suggestion: read it in segments and then focus on the room he discusses for a while. Don't swallow it in one great gulp.
This is an excellent book on removing clutter from your life. His explanation as to the reasons people feel comfortable with clutter is really an eye opener. My only criticism and the reason I did not give this book 5 stars is simply that at 7 hours length in audio format, it is just too long. An abridged version under 3 hours would have been much more appropriate for the average listener. I say this because I feel some chapters are not really relevant to most people. Apart from that it is an excellent insightful book.
I thought I just needed a little help,but it turns out I Needed this. I purchased 3 audible books last week. 2 clutter and one organization. This one is the gem! yes it is a bit long but so good that I just finished and am going to listen again NOW!. I have already discarded 3 large trash bags. Given one to goodwill and get this I didn't really try to do it. It was like wow here is something I was thinking about doing with this THING, and guess what I was never really going to do it so it went in the trash. Easy easy! I am 52 and my mom loves to save she gave me this little dress that I wore at my ONE yr. old birthday party ! I have been carrying this dress around in a box for for 50+ Years through who knows how many moves through at least twenty STATES!Now the dress is gone into the garbage Angel I still have the picture of my cake smeared face. Can you imagine other little momentums odds and end s these little things that no one sees are packed in boxes in your home? if you can then this is the book you've needed. Peter is gentle and fun to listen too. I can't tell you how many laugh out loud moments I had , and said to myself hey wait a minute I DO that! lol ! It all made sense! I have learned a lot about myself and now have a right to be liberated from all this STUFF! Those few bags of garbage are gone and I am not even regretting getting rid of them. If I threw something away that I MIGHT need someday I am confident that I can buy a new one. So really, if you need a little help, get this one, I'm confident that you are going to find that you need this more than you thought. Happy tossing!

Just because someone gave you an item; it does not mean that you must keep it forever - you may discard it.
It was an easy listen and definitely gave me a lot to think about as I try to organize my house.
He is realistic- he knows that people cannot change overnight and that taking on too much at once leads to failure.
The idea I took is that change is gradual and small steps can lead to big changes. I feel like this book really helped me realize that I don't have to change everything all at once.
