I liked this, it was so well written and narrated that I greatly disliked 2 of the main characters children, they angered me. Thats good writing. Well reccommended.
"Recommendable familiar saga"
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The story was superb and also the narration. The novel tells the story of Penelope Keeling and her 3 grown up children and it goes back and forth in time, from the time of Penelope's parents until Penelope's old age. A very long listen but very rewarding.
"My mum's favourite book ..."
... and one I love more each time I read or listen to it. Hannah Gordon is fabulous as a narrator and just perfect for this book.
"The Shell seekers"
Brilliant no less than one should expect difficult to switch off but so good to pick up again. I'll listen to this once more no doubt
"Unabridged version excellent - no longer available"
Have really enjoyed this best-seller after keeping it in my library for quite a while. Now that I have finished, I and am dumbstruck to find that the version I bought (and recommend) is no longer available from Audible. The full unabridged version, beautifully read by Hannah Gordon, is 25 hours long. I cannot imagine how an abridged version of only 3 hours can be anything but a travesty of the original. The full story has so much depth and held my attention throughout, greatly helped by the warmth and skill of the narrator. Well worth waiting till Audible has the unabridged version again.
"A Lovely Relaxing Read"
It's up there with the greats!
I knew the story from having read it in paperback in the past and so the story was not a surprise but hearing it being read was a great experience and a great way to de-stress .
The scenes where she is in the house on her own , her little home sounded so cosy .
I did, I had different emotions throughout the story. It will bring a tear, make you angry, there is plenty going on in the story so you cover a range of emotions while you listen.
This is the best audiobook I have listened to so far.
I became entirely engrossed in the story. Such a clear picture is painted by Rosamunde Pilcher which makes you feel as if you are there with the characters and experiencing every emotion with them.
I can't think of a more suitable narrator for this audiobook than Hannah Gordon. For me she was Penelope.
At 25 hours long it is unlikely that you could listen to this story all in one sitting, however, the story never felt long and I was always reluctant to press the pause button. I didn't want it to end and will definitely listen to it again in the future.
"A great Story"
One of the best books I've listened to since 2002 when I started listening to audiobooks using tapes.
"Warm and fuzzy!"
This is a feel-good book that is easy to listen to,with a nice story and characters you could relate to and would probably like to have known in real life
Penelope has to be the favourite charcter in the book because she is the sort of person everyone would like to have in their life
Hannah Gordon has a soft velvety voice that is easy to listen to and is in keeping witht he characters in the book
The clearing of Penelope's house by her daughter after her death struck a chord with me personally
Penelope's death was like losing a member of your own family as it was treated so realistically and the reaction of her children was very believable.
At first I thought this was going to be a very "twee"book but it was so easy to settle into that the thought didn't cross my mind for very long!
The colours, sounds and description of Penelope's walk along the Cornish Coast
Thought provoking...about the circles in life.
