Loved it! Took me a while to finish; but that's because I haven't had any free time. It did not disappoint! Looking forward to reading (or listening to) the next in the series.
I am a relatively new listener, but as a mostly auditory learner, this has been an amazing experience. I LOVE a good audio performer!
Davina Porter gives a stunning performance in Dragonfly in Amber. She makes you feel every character so that you begin to recognize every voice and she immerses you in the story. You feel like you are there.
As for Diana Gabaldon's work, this story is the best I have read in my opinion out of the three in the series I have listened to already. It genuinely made me feel emotion. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I was heartbroken. She does her series in a way that is not at all cheesy, but feels genuine and is so, so good. Especially if you are a history lover. It is like you are looking into someones lives, even if they are fictional it is written so you feel like you are peeking in. It is truly captivating. Even though it is long, it doesn't loose its luster and you can't wait to listen again to hear what will happen next.
My favorite character is probably Claire, which I know is a given as she is the lead. But she is such a inspirational character as a woman. She is bringing a little bit of feminism and gumption to the 1740's.
Davina Porter brings life to every character, she makes you recognize them before it is stated just by her voice. She brings a personality and inflection that you cannot get out of just a page.
When the line like a dragonfly in amber was stated in the book, as is its title I cried.. Hard.
Amazing series. If you have time, listen to it. I know it is long but the story never gets boring or dull. Listen to it while you're going to work, school, what have you. Maybe even while you are doing stuff around the house. You will always be interested when you go back to what Claire and Jamie are up to and what will happen next.
I have a rather eclectic love of books. I know what I like and I tend not to be a severe critic. If I enjoyed it, it gets 4 or 5 stars.
This is a great book, but I can't say enough about the narrator. She is able to speak with a Scottish accent, a British accent, a French accent, and she almost gets the American accent correct! This is the second in the series and it was so wonderful. Again, it is a very long book - so you get a lot of hours for your money with this one!
While the historical pieces of the story were interesting, it was unnecessarily drawn out and tried to fill in the weak areas (or perhaps writer freeze) with graphic sex scenes. There seemed to be a lot of weak areas! I wanted a story, not a Harlequin romance.
Focused more on the story rather than the intimacy of the couple. Even that became boring.
Did well with the various accents.
Would have been better if it were shortened.
Absolutely. I will listen to this series a million times. Going on this journey with Jamie and Claire is unlike any other book experience I've encountered. Of course I'll listen again!
How can I answer this question? We obviously all love Jamie and Claire, so I'll leave them out of this consideration. Murtagh is probably my favorite (although I did have to debate for a while over Murtagh and Master Raymond). It's as though he lives to make sure Jamie doesn't screw everything up. He is honorable and loyal, and how can you NOT love him?
All of it. Her Jamie is my Jamie! When Jamie pops up in the Lord John series, I always get a bit peeved. THAT'S not what Jamie sounds like!
JOHN GREY! I always hoped we'd see him again. Thank goodness he got his own series, because I love him to bits.
Aside from Lord John, I really love Master Raymond. There's nobody quite as mysterious as he is in the entire series.
Is your heart ready to be a bit stomped on? Because it's about to go down, y'all.
I actually haven't heard a book on audible that i thought was better performed: the reader is amazing. The book is also quite amazing, with the author using the English language like a proper wordsmith.
The Outlander series is one of my favorites of all time, and I've read all of the books more than once. This was my first time to listen to any of them on audio book, though! Although when reading the books, this wasn't one of my very favorite books of the series, I enjoyed listening to it so much! I will definitely buy more in the series.
The continuity in the story line from one book to the next is fascinating. Characters are well developed and narration is fantastic
I like the blend of history and fiction with suspense and intrigue
Davina Porter's rich accent and unique narration for each character brings them to life. I can hear her voice in my mind even when I'm reading and not listening to the audible portion.
