This series is a wonderful time travel, historical fiction series, with a deep love story woven throughout. I Read them years ago and listened to the whole series on Audible 3-4 years ago! Davina Porter does a spectacular job of the narration, better than the reader for the off shoot titles Diana wrote. I've listened to this one again getting ready for the Starz series from this book! Still a great listen!
I am an ICU nurse with a 75 minute drive to work and back 4 days a week. I wanted to read Outlander but didn't have the time! Audiohooked!
Diana Gabaldon is an epic, historically-driven writer! I fell in love with Jamie and Claire all over again. Add a touch of medicine and a delightful pickpocket and it is a must win! Smart and delectable reading!
But of course - every character. Davina tells this story by adding voices for each character. Her Scottish accent varies with the character and I always know when Jamie is speaking!
No - too much good stuff not to mull it around for a while before diving back in!
If you haven't seen Season 2 of Outlander on Starz - don't read until after the finale of the season! I think it is much better to watch DIA and then read or listen to the book. I have listened to this book 3 times!
Engaging, great vocal performance, and an entrancing tale. It is woven through with mystery, epic love, murder, and heroism throughout. You will be drawn into and made part of the fabric of her story.
Story aside, I absolutely love Davina Porter's narration! The book is slow going in more than a few parts but overall a very entertaining adventure. I'm (definitely) downloading the third book after this review :)
Book two in this series (currently season two of the TV series on Starz) doesn't start exactly where you might expect it to if you just finished book one! The continuing story of Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser takes place in Paris and Scotland in 1746. This particular book explains a bit of Scottish history while cementing the lifelong commitment of Jamie and Claire to each other.
I think this is the second (or third) time I've listened to the book, after having read the print version once. This well-loved novel series is "epic." If you don't like "time travel books" don't let that put you off; it's not like people are beaming back and forth all the time, and you won't get all muddled in the time/space continuum. I would recommend reading the books in order though. The series is full of adventure, history, great characters, a bit of steamy romance, and is really about a relationship between two people that are in it for better or for worse.
On occasion, I think the author gets a little wordy. The tangents are few, but they do exist. But, while she now has numerous million sellers under her belt, this WAS only her second novel.
The narration by Davina Porter is stellar. She is the standard that audio book narrators should look to when developing their skills.
When the book ends (after 40 hours!) there is a short teaser for the next book in the series. I had planned to read something else next, but listening to the teaser was a tactical error - I think I need more of Jamie and Claire and Scotland.
The narration of this story brings it to life! Highly recommend this read! Gabaldon does a fantastic job of weaving a tale for the characters and Porter is the perfect choice for a narrator of this novel.
Yes, it is a fantastic story. I listened to it on long runs, whilst doing laundry, gardening, walking the dog...you get the point. I purchased book 3 before book 2 was even finished so I didn't need to wait to continue the story. It is full of adventure and history with strong characters and a good pinch of humour too.
Without the Scottish accents you wouldn't get the same authentic experience. At first in book 1 I thought her voice for Claire sounded too old but once I got used to it I thought she was perfect.
I absolutely love this book, and I loved the first book as well. When I listen to this book; or rather the book series I am totally whisked away to another place and another time. I'm looking forward to listening to Voyager the third book in the outlander series.
