Experience the adventure.
Clair. Strong and purposeful.
Only in Outlander series.
After Clair decided not to go back threw the stones.
This series is incredible. The characters, the blending of history, and the fact that Gabaldon actually made the time travel so believable all made this a story I couldn't stop listening to.
It's hard to pick. Both of the main characters were so engaging.
It was flawless.
I wouldn't say my reaction was extreme. I just found the story riveting and didn't want to stop listening.
I highly recommend this series to anyone who like historical fiction.
Considering all of the positive reviews indicating how much people have enjoyed the books of this series ; I can say only, I was left behind.
I was determined to like this book and looking forward to having sequels to the story, which I really hoped to enjoy.
However, my determination was futile, because I could not develop, let alone maintain, an interest in this story.
Yes. It is a great romance novel with depth and a twist of time travel.
The depth of historical context the author goes to lets you get lost in the story.
Yes. She is a perfect fit, bringing Clair's personality to life.
I laughed, I cried, I got angry, but what I liked best is it made me curious.
Each book in this series is long. Which allows for in depth character, context, and story development. You will get attached to characters. If you like historical novels and romance you will like this series, however if you are picking it up for the time traveling alone you will be disappointed.
This novel could have been an entry in the Guardian newspaper's annual bad sex award for the most cringe-worthy sex scenes in fiction. Yes, I cringed with contact embarrassment throughout, but the worst aspect was the total lack of accuracy. I'm able to do the willing suspension of disbelief thing, but if I'm going to enjoy a time travel fantasy, then I need not only for the historical details to be correct, but also for the characters to behave in realistically believable human ways. This book failed completely on both counts. If you're not a historical pedant, as I admittedly am, and you just want to immerse yourself in a steamy romance, then you might enjoy this book, but I quickly lost interest and will not be choosing any other books by this author.
Not until I have read all the books.
You really care about what happens next and how they will fare.
Her wonderful command of the different voices of all the characters and their emotions.
As much as possible.
I have finished four of these books now, and always want to start the next one right away. The fourth one did not have a preview of the next book, and I thought it was the end. Tears came to my eyes. But, then I thought it can't be the end. There is so much more of their story. Then I found there were at least 4 more of the usual long-length books and 2 novellas, and more. Then happy tears came to my eyes!!
I downloaded this book out of random recommendation from Audible without knowing anything about it. I didn't even read the synopsis. So, in the beginning of the book when the background and scene establishment were made, it was a bit boring for me cos I didn't know where the story will lead. It was about 1 hour of listening in that boring mood. However, the more I listened and stick to it, the story became more intended and engaging. Now I found myself trying to find all of my free time to just listen to it.
As an Asian, I don't know much about English and Scottish history. But this book gave me a new perspective and knowledge at the same time. I researched more of the historical facts about the settings during the Rising and WWII. It's a fun way to educate myself and get to enjoy the plot and character. Now, I am inspired to travel to Scotland just to see the castle and such :)
All and all, I highly recommend this book for anyone who has spare time to travel back into time ^_^
I'm already listening to the story again. I want to catch anything I might have inadvertently missed the time before.
I expected to like it, but how much I liked it came as a total surprise to me. I've never before written a book review that wasn't required of me in school, but I feel compelled to tell people about how much I'm enjoying this series.
I would be hard-pressed to say which of the voices was my favorite. Any of the Scottish Highland characters, probably, as the sound of that beautiful accent stays in my head even when I'm not listening to the book.
If by "extreme reaction" you mean "becoming totally obsessed with it" - then yes. I had an extreme reaction to it. I've laughed and cried multiple times.
Early into the book I posted a snarky, "Someone put romance in my science fiction again!" to my Facebook account. I didn't name the book I was reading because 1. I was embarrassed to be caught out reading a romance novel, and 2. I was quite enjoying it in spite of myself.
I've begun to refer to the "Lord John" novels as my "Gateway Drug". On November 12, 2014, Audible offered "Lord John and the Private Matter" as its "Deal of the Day". I like historical fiction - and although I didn't know anything about the time period, the description and reviews convinced me to give it a try. I finished it quickly and in short order bought several more of the Lord John novels. Believing I had exhausted the supply of those, I went looking for more Diana Gabaldon novels and found that she was better known for her series Outlander. After initially hedging because I perceived it to be a romance, I fell completely and totally in love with the Outlander series, myself. I'm reading "Dragonfly in Amber" now, and I'm worried about the future state of my mental health seeing as there are ONLY eight books in the series (give or take a couple of novellas). I'm an English teacher, and a voracious reader, and the first book of the series came out when I was twenty! (And oh, if I love it now - how I'd have loved it then! I suspect I would have benefited greatly from having a literary role model like Claire Beauchamp Randall Frazier, to say nothing of Diana Gabaldon herself!)
Upon Googling Diana Gabaldon I found that a TV series based on the book had recently premiered. I haven't had television in many years, and I haven't missed it. I vastly prefer my own imagination to what I see on the screen and have been disappointed with the few film adaptations of favorite novels that I've read. I made an exception for this one, idly clicking on the first episode in the series, which is at present the only free episode being offered by the station that produces it. Now I find myself contemplating getting cable TV just so that I can see the rest of the series. So yes, I guess you might say that I've had quite a reaction to this book!
This book would be perfect for aficionados of the lazy Sunday afternoon romance novel who are looking for an infusion of high budget action movie. I was caught completely off-guard by the sexual tone of this book. There is action, yes. But the storyline seems to exist only as a means of delivering unending tender sexual encounters between the two heroes. Furthermore, this book seems to reinforce antiquated gender roles. I don't want to give away the plot any further, but this would not be recommended for the progressive feminist crowd. I listened to the whole book, just to give it a fair assessment, but I will not be continuing this series.
She clearly communicated a different tone and personality for each of the characters. It was easy to follow the story based on her verbal cues. It was easy to immerse myself in her descriptions.
I would remove roughly half of the sex scenes, and cut the remaining scenes down to about 50% of their original length. Many of the scenes in this book dragged on much longer than they should have.
Exciting ,intriguing ,romantic
Great story with wonderful descriptions. You can almost feel like you are there. I got lost in the book and looked forward to listening when I could. I look forward to reading more from the series.
I love this audio book! The reader has a wonderful voice ! I do have one major complaint though. For some reason you can hear very faintly background talking and even coughing during the reading of this book. I use noise cancelling headphones which makes it even more pronounced! I found it very annoying at times. I wonder if anyone else noticed this.I would have given 5 stars to performance if this had not been an issue .
