Disappointing, slow, despite the good narration. I can't imagine how it has spawned so many sequels. Hard to characterize the genre this book fits in. As an adventure it is lame, as a fantasy slow. I don't read romance so if this is one I won't ever read romance
I have the privelage of being able to listen to my Ipod for 8+ hours a day and this is definately one of the best series I have ever listened to! i have listened to the series up to Drums of Autumn but hesitated on the next two as they were abridged. Then Echo came out and i just couldnt wait any longer! I purchased the next two books anyways and enjoyed them very much! im almost able to start Echo in the Bone and cant hardly wait! This definately is a series i will listen to over and over again even though its long.
I cant wait until Audible aquires the unabridged rights to The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes!

I have spent the past year passing up this series of books.... I would look at them from time to time and think "Nah,not really what I'm looking for" I was a "terrible fool." These are amazing. Granted they can get a bit long winded but the unabridged version is far and away worth it. You'll find yourself swept away in a fantastic whirlwind of timeless passion as well as remarkable historical thrills and chills. I had to upgrade my credits to get the last three books. No question, it had to be done. P.S. Davina Porter should do a romance with Phil Gigante. That is if she hasn't already and I just don't know about it. "Heavy Sigh"
It took me several months to get past chapter 2, but once I did I was enthralled! The story line is fascinating and unpredictable. The love story has a nice gradual start to it...as it should. The characters are like-able, yet flawed...but that's what makes them feel so real. It is in my top 10 of best books ever "read" for me, I'm hooked! I've just finished Voyager and plan to continue through the rest of the series. A narrator can make or break a book and Davina Porter has done this book justice. I can differentiate between characters well, and her Scottish accent is amazing... as well as her French. Well worth the credit and time, a must listen. But be warned, you won't be able to stop with just one ; )
I am SO glad I found this series on Audible. I just finished "Outlander" and now I'm immediately getting "Dragonfly In Amber". I hope it's the second book as there was no mention that I could see on Audible's website.
I adored this book!!
I am hooked to this series and will listen to it over and over again. I am listening to the complete series in any form I can find but prefer the complete unabridge if available. You will be back for the complete book. I recommend this to everyone no matter how long it takes you to complete it. I am even purchasing all the books in first additions if possible for my collection of favorite books, not to lend.
This book was slow to start but got more interesting and captivating the longer I listened. I had an extremely hard time not listening but hey everyone has to sleep and work, right. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the books. I hope they are just as good. Also the narrator is excellent.
Outlander is a first in a series of books. A fantasy but told with some historical background that makes you believe it is possible. Love, struggle, and honor are all parts of this Scottish tale.
The storyline is intriguing and fascinating, but the clincher is the narration by Davina Porter. Her accents are amazing.
A bit offputting were the so very numerous explicit sexual encounters. Makes one wonder if Diana Gabaldon is in fact a male as it would seem to appeal to the male ego that a woman, forced to marry a stranger, would initiate oral sex as their first married act together. Yup. To also not object to but apparently enjoy his smelly sweaty body makes her very unbelievable or perhaps British. They aren't too fond of showers?
Anyway, sexual encounters aside, the story was great, the literary tension wonderful and the characters very full. Highly recommend, but not to any of my younger relatives. Too much sex.
Outlander series is an all time favorite audiobook. Davina Porter is a master at narration - switching accents & tone to keep pace with the characters in the book. The storyline never gets old no matter how many times I listen to it - a must for long car rides.
