I was disinclined to like this book. A long epic saga involving (ugh) time travel? Not for me! But I gave it a listen and was hooked within the first hour. Davina Porter is a talented reader -- her voicing of Jamie is so convincing you'll forget a woman is speaking. The Scottish brogues are fabulous -- I found myself thinking and dreaming in a Scottish accent! The story is riveting, romantic, historical, well-researched, well-written, suspenseful, and deeply moving. The scenery is richly painted and the characters are complex, deeply drawn and well developed, and people you will not likely forget. This is NOT your typical trashy romance novel, so be prepared for a real read.
All of this nonsense about too much sex is really interesting to me after listening to the book in its entirety. There was nothing extreme or offensive about any of the instances, actually I think they add substance and passion to the character's relationship. Without it, the story would have been lacking.
Otherwise, a very lively and exciting listen. The narration is spot on. I found myself grateful that I had experienced this audibly instead of reading it. The accents and languages needed for full appreciation are something my own head couldn't exactly conjure up.
Overall a delightful experience, I will be buying the next of the series.
This book starts well, it pulls you in and is quite enjoyable. By the end though, all you want is the end to come. Still, I was compelled to actually make it to the end.
There is a strange incongruity between the strong, intelligent woman that is first presented and the stupid things that she does and says, the sole purpose of which are to set up some conflict or love scene. The intelligent woman that we first meet would never have left her horse and "escaped" through the wilderness. There were several set ups of this sort that were just that, set ups.
It was rather irritating, if your going to give us an intelligent heroine, than don't make her stupid every time you need a dramatic scene to move the story on.
I finished it, mostly enjoyed it but like several others, have no intention of reading the rest of the trilogy.
What a fantastic book!! First I was too apprehensive to start it - then I just couldn't switch it off!! Then I got tired of it thinking I was being given too much useless information, but then I still needed to hear what happens.
THEN I wanted to fast forward because I couldn't go through the pain or tears and then it was finished and I feel like I've lost some part of my day!!
An amazing story but Davind Porter is the best EVER narrator I have EVER listened to!!!! She brings everyone to life, everyone has character, you can feel it, experience it and live it with her. THANK YOU SO MUCH for chosing her to narrate this book!! Now I HAVE to download the next one!!! Have to see what happens, I just hope it isn't full of this history from the first.
I highly recommend this story. I had Outlander on my wishlist for months and never purchased it as the time travel aspect of the book did not appeal to me. When I finally purchased it and began listening, I couldn't stop. The story was riveting and I fell in love with the characters.
Outlander is not only a superb book to read, the audio book brought everything to life in a way that has now made me an audio book junkie. Davina Porter is an amazing talent. I loved every minute of this book.
Disappointing, slow, despite the good narration. I can't imagine how it has spawned so many sequels. Hard to characterize the genre this book fits in. As an adventure it is lame, as a fantasy slow. I don't read romance so if this is one I won't ever read romance
I have the privelage of being able to listen to my Ipod for 8+ hours a day and this is definately one of the best series I have ever listened to! i have listened to the series up to Drums of Autumn but hesitated on the next two as they were abridged. Then Echo came out and i just couldnt wait any longer! I purchased the next two books anyways and enjoyed them very much! im almost able to start Echo in the Bone and cant hardly wait! This definately is a series i will listen to over and over again even though its long.
I cant wait until Audible aquires the unabridged rights to The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes!

I have spent the past year passing up this series of books.... I would look at them from time to time and think "Nah,not really what I'm looking for" I was a "terrible fool." These are amazing. Granted they can get a bit long winded but the unabridged version is far and away worth it. You'll find yourself swept away in a fantastic whirlwind of timeless passion as well as remarkable historical thrills and chills. I had to upgrade my credits to get the last three books. No question, it had to be done. P.S. Davina Porter should do a romance with Phil Gigante. That is if she hasn't already and I just don't know about it. "Heavy Sigh"
