I am an avid audiobook fiction fan and had just become a fan of historical romance when Audible.com put the entire Outlander series on sale for a ridiculously low price. I purchased ALL 7 books based on the overwhelming positive reviews of the 1st book - Outlander. By the time I got around to listening to this book, I'd forgotten the specifics of the plot... When the book began, I was certain I'd made a huge mistake as the beginning of the story was not your typical "highlander" story; but, I kept listening anyway- still assuming I'd wasted my $$ due to not investigating the books thoroughly. Boy, was I wrong. The way this book weaves through time and produces this epic love story is brilliant! The book sometimes gets bogged down with details that appear to be irrelevant, yet it all intertwines into the storyline and characterizations that make this book impossible to put down. I'm through the 4th novel in this series now and it keeps getting better. Lastly, the narration is superb. Each character is clearly differentiated by the narrator and makes it seamless in its story-telling.
yes I will listen to them again .each time I listen I hear something different that I missed the first time
I love each person in the book they are all different and the narrator makes them all different so you can keep a voice to each one.
I cant pick a favorite yet ...I find the whole series a joy to listen to
yes but I do need to sleep.
I started out with this book and needless to say I have all six and I'm going to finish the series .she keeps you wanting more to find out how it will end .love these books... can't say anything more.
Sexy. Action. Heart-wrenching.
While I love the story and Davina's narration... Throughout the entire book it sounds like there is someone talking in the background. I listened to the book in my car, out for walks, at home, at work (pretty much anywhere I could!) and most often I was completely alone-- yet I always heard someone talking that wasn't Davina. It sounds like someone was talking in the studio behind her. Very distracting and annoying! It's a good thing the story is good enough to overlook this annoying quirk of the recording.
A good story, I learned some stuff about 18th century Scotland and the Highlanders; but I wasn't expecting a historical ROMANCE which this pretty much was. I am not a romance novel reader, so the juicy love scenes weren't my cup of tea. But if you need to eat up 33 hours in a car, go for it!
This is fine for people who want a torrid historical period romance with plenty of violence and domestic abuse, etc. justified by the time period. I thought I was getting a type of sci-fi time travel book and I guess I let myself be mislead by the positive reviews. Also, I don't understand why Claire took her predicament so calmly and why her escape efforts were so ridiculously lame. Oh, and she orgasms after 10 seconds? Hmmm. The character was just not remotely believable for me. Most of the others weren't either.
MUCH less dwelling on whippings, floggings, strappings, rape and near-rape, torture, endless sex with Jamie - I couldn't get past the first 1/3 of the book, even to find out if she went back to 1945, etc. Obviously there's a huge market for this type of book, but for me - ugg!!
She was great, no complaints.
Honestly - Claire! Can't answer this appropriately given that for me, the whole premise is just not what I like.
Thank you Audible for your return policy!
People who prefer historical romance novels
More plot surrounding time travel, and less plot surrounding her love life with Jamie. That was most of the novel
Jamie had a decent accent
all the random side characters with confusing names who did little for the plot or the setting
This was too long by like, 5 hours or the equivalent 300 pages
I typically like old English stories especially when they have a mystical aspect such as going back in time but after 20 hours of listening the story went nowhere. Neither of the two main protagonist brought anything truly interesting to the story, nor did I find the obstacles confronting them of any real challenge. I doubt I would try another book by this author.
I don't mind a little romance , in fact I like it, but I need a little more adventure, or a lot more human interest and challenging obstacles, something that puts a little more on the line than life-and-death or brings a tear to my eye.
Story aside, Porter's performance was great.
I must confess I first started reading this because the show coming out and though I thought the book was a complete waste of my time, I felt it could be better for television. Ok now that's out of the way. The beginning was so promising, but even then there were hints I didn't quite catch of what it was about to become.
Sex is not bad for all books in some its a thing of morality and hurts the people around a character, others it character building and shows what type of person they are. In Outlander it's a cheap ploy to get two people together (It wasn't really about sex till certain events) and it wasn't necessary (or atleast at that moment) The Claire and Jamie relationship was great then slowly ruined after one page.
In life I'm told sex ruins relationships and so is the case with this book, it may be good to some, great to others, but all I got out of it was after barely getting to know someone in the sack is much more beneficial then getting to know them as a person. Know what your getting into, its not an awful, it just could have been so much better.
I would make the book shorter by 20 hours. The author goes on and on way too much about details that have nothing to do with the story, and I don't need so many details about the weird types of sex the characters are going to have.
Maybe an abridged version.
I actually got bored after the first 10 hours and listened to most of it in fast forward speed just to see if anything of interest would happen.
Like the others I think the narrator did a good job, but her voice sounded just a little too old for the young characters, it kind of threw things off for me.
This has to be one of my absolute favorites.
Her ability to change between accents, to bring emotion to each and make you feel that you are listening to the actual people talking.
Oh, if only I could have!
This was a total 5 star........ could have been 6.
