I loved, I mean LOOOVVVVVVED this book. I couldn't stop listening - I even listened at work while doing mundane stuff. This is by far the best book I've heard since Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. Davina Porter is now one of my top narrators - she does a spectacular job reading with accent and enthusiasm.
The story of Clair and Jamie is heart wrenching and joyous. These two are in my mind all the time and I am downloading the 2nd book today! Highly recommend giving this a listen or two or three!
This is an amazing story but made so much more enjoyable by the narration of Diana Gabalon - the woman is unbelievable. I listened in awe to her narration, her
use of the language is something most of us can only inspire to. Highly recommended.
I was disappointed in the graphic intimacy. There should be a rating on books like movies. If you have forever to find out what is going to happen, this book is entertaining but I kept thinking she would bring it all around but my mother (shame on her) who is a fan, says there are many more books before I get to find out what happens. I guess I just don't have that many hours or want to spend my credits all on one author for the next six months.
We happened on this author completely by accident. We are now on her 3rd book. At 40 hours or so for each one that is dedication! I have grown to love these characters and the situations she gets them into are priceless. I could do with a little less graphic sex, but that's just me, I guess it sells and it is never gratuitous these characters love each other very much.
The times the story is set in are exciting and history has always been a hobby of mine. The idea of going back and living it is a bit daunting - being the spoiled 21st century woman I am. But while explaining the difficulties they are not belabored at all.
Overall I was glad to see the story continuing and I was definitely not disappointed. I gave it a 5.
The narrator is first rate, but the story is painfully slow. I found the protaganist to be irritating and annoying. The hero seemed nice enough, but I could not get through the book. I could only make it to part 2 and then gave up.
Beautifully written AND narrated. Yes, the book is long (another reason I liked it), but the author slowly builds such wonderful characters that you become engrossed in their lives as they spill forth in this novel. One of the best books I've read (listened to) since "Pillars of the Earth." It is a wonderful love story and the historical context is very well done. Well worth every penny.
Fantasy and Romance Author
This audiobook is one of my favorite readings, and worth a repeat listening. Davina Porter's wonderful performance really improves an already-marvellous story of time travel and adventure in eighteenth-century Scotland. Outstanding!
I really like the writing style and narrator. After the first few chapters I thought this might be an excellent book. Well after nine hours of listening I finally came to the point that this book wasn't going anywhere. It is definitely 90% romance novel. From the description it seemed more like an adventure/fantasy with some romance. I had to quit listening after nine hours which I have never done on an audible book. I couldn't stand one more scene of actually nothing happening. If you are a man...be warned. I'm giving it to my wife who I'm sure will enjoy it. :)
I am a child of the 50's, love kids, animals, plants. I adopted a Sulphur mustang mare (desendant of the warhorses of the Conquistadors).
I could barely quit listening. I've listened to it twice, and will be going on to the next story in the series. The main characters, independent Claire Randall and gallant Scottish warrior Jaime Fraser, are both intriguing as personalities and are sizzle together. The historical background and detail added fascinating detail to the story. The narrator, Davina Porter, was outstanding. If you like historical novels, adventure and romance you can't go wring with this one...
