I was a 'readaholic' for most of my life. I started crochet and other hobbies. That took away from my reading time. I discovered audio books at the library. That set me off. now, that I am older my eyes make it too difficult to read. So I now am a very diligent audio book listener!
I read this book when it first came out. It was the first book I read by author Terry Brooks. I loved it. This put Mr Brooks on my list of authors to read. I wasn't aware of it being released as an audiobook. I found it while browsing the other day and purchased it. The story about a man trying to redefine himself after an emotional loss and the worrying start of job burnout with some apathy thrown in. Early on we see that Ben Holiday is aware of what is going on. He realizes this while reflecting on his loss and looking through a Christmas catalog. A catalog that offers a Magic Kingdom for sale. Well the audio version is every bit as enjoyable as the written. I enjoyed Dick Hill's narration. He has the perfect old 'young' voice for our main character. He does a good job with the other characters. Mr Hill reads his story slightly different from other narrators. This takes a little to get used too. I found it relaxing. Anyone looking for a fantasy story should give this a try. I did hesitate in the purchase as this book is #1 of a series. I have purchased other #1 audiobooks of known series without the other books ever getting to audio or worse not being available in this country! This series is available on audio and here at Audible.
Very well told fantasy story with humor and relay ability due to combination of real world and fantasy one. Narrator did a great job with different voices and in conveying proper emotions.
Long time Audible listener with a long commute everyday. Great way to catch up on my reading!
I read this book a long time ago and liked the series. Listening to it gave it new life.
I can't pinpoint one moment, but it does bring to mind things people do when grieving. Ben buys a whole kingdom to escape the grief of the death of his wife.
Only the other books in this series. I do like his narration and would buy another audio that he narrates even if for no other reason than that he narrates it.
What would you buy with One Million dollars?
The story is awesome, a little far fetched but what science fiction fantasy novel isn't. Terry Brooks has always been on of my favorite authors and I like this series even better than the Shannara series. (Although that one is good too!)
The idea that a kingdom could be for sale in a far off place, intriguing enough to continue reading. But then, the story catches you up and takes you with Ben on his adventures. The narrator did a wonderful job with the voices. I think the dragon was spot on.
I love audiobooks. I usually listen while quilting, or just relaxing in the garden. My Great Danes even settle down when they hear a book.
Adventure,little mystery, fun!
That not all characters were hetro
Foreclosure for you,
More mystical characters with strong magic
Terry Brooks is a great go to author!!! He is amazingly detailed and his stories are absolutely enthralling!
The story as a whole is great! You have to finish in order to fully appreciate the book.
This is the first and I really liked the way that it was read. There were many different accents and voices that were perceived in the dictation.
None the movie would not be as good! They never are.
I know that there are other comments on Dick Hill's dictation not being a very good dictation of the book. I feel that he has done a great job on the book. The characters had the right amount of surprise, excitement, sadness, etc... Each character carried it's own accent and sound which made it easy to differentiate between the characters while listening to the book. I have read this book many times on my own and will now listen to it over and over again. Great job to everyone involved.
Love a good sci-fi audiobook or Buddhist lecture.
Just pure fun
He was very versatile, able to do a wide range of emotions and voices
This is one of the best pieces of light entertainment I've heard in ages. The narration is first class, and the story amidst the adventure and flashes of genuinely funny humor has moments of great humanity, especially in those areas that deal with Ben Holiday grieving over his lost wife and his diminished passion for life.
