Excellent clean read! A nice adventure in a fantasy land.
The narration was a bit stiff, but enjoyable.
I loved this book in 6th grade and waited for years to share it with my kids on a long car ride. This, however, was the first time the kids have asked not to finish a book. I can't say a blame them. The plot was as fun and interesting as I remembered but Dick Hill was simply terrible. He used this bizzare staccato narration which sounded like a drone. WHat was supposed to be a Chicago accent for the main character just sounded fake and cartoonish and made no sense. The whole story just blurred together. When even a 10 year old states "the story is ok but I just can't stand the guy who is reading it" you know you have a problem. What a let down! I dream someday this will be re-recorded with a better narrator.
You know, someone recommended to this me in my youth and I had always wanted to read this since. .. some twenty years later I am listening to this on Audible and really enjoy the story. A Warning , the build up is long but very much needed when you have such character buildup and attention to detail to help illustrate and lend to believability.
This story has many analogies to the human condition. There is symbolism and morals built in.
Swiftly now onto book 2!
I was a 'readaholic' for most of my life. I started crochet and other hobbies. That took away from my reading time. I discovered audio books at the library. That set me off. now, that I am older my eyes make it too difficult to read. So I now am a very diligent audio book listener!
I read this book when it first came out. It was the first book I read by author Terry Brooks. I loved it. This put Mr Brooks on my list of authors to read. I wasn't aware of it being released as an audiobook. I found it while browsing the other day and purchased it. The story about a man trying to redefine himself after an emotional loss and the worrying start of job burnout with some apathy thrown in. Early on we see that Ben Holiday is aware of what is going on. He realizes this while reflecting on his loss and looking through a Christmas catalog. A catalog that offers a Magic Kingdom for sale. Well the audio version is every bit as enjoyable as the written. I enjoyed Dick Hill's narration. He has the perfect old 'young' voice for our main character. He does a good job with the other characters. Mr Hill reads his story slightly different from other narrators. This takes a little to get used too. I found it relaxing. Anyone looking for a fantasy story should give this a try. I did hesitate in the purchase as this book is #1 of a series. I have purchased other #1 audiobooks of known series without the other books ever getting to audio or worse not being available in this country! This series is available on audio and here at Audible.
Very well told fantasy story with humor and relay ability due to combination of real world and fantasy one. Narrator did a great job with different voices and in conveying proper emotions.
Long time Audible listener with a long commute everyday. Great way to catch up on my reading!
I read this book a long time ago and liked the series. Listening to it gave it new life.
I can't pinpoint one moment, but it does bring to mind things people do when grieving. Ben buys a whole kingdom to escape the grief of the death of his wife.
Only the other books in this series. I do like his narration and would buy another audio that he narrates even if for no other reason than that he narrates it.
What would you buy with One Million dollars?
The story is awesome, a little far fetched but what science fiction fantasy novel isn't. Terry Brooks has always been on of my favorite authors and I like this series even better than the Shannara series. (Although that one is good too!)
The idea that a kingdom could be for sale in a far off place, intriguing enough to continue reading. But then, the story catches you up and takes you with Ben on his adventures. The narrator did a wonderful job with the voices. I think the dragon was spot on.
